Damn, I noticed with the new year Starbucks has pulled the IHT from its stores. Technically you were supposed to pay for the paper but the unofficial policy was you could read it for free. The little pay box was just a loophole to get around Korea's law against giving away major daily papers.

I'm gonna miss the NYT copy they carried. I also liked reading the Jongang insert, the column by the TV lady. She was always pretty funny raking Korean dramas over the 숯. I'm not gonna miss the Korean blog column. The guy should have just titled it "Best of the Marmot Hole". (An excellent blog, mind you, but it just seemed to me the guy writing the column was pretty much getting paid to let the Marmot Hole guy to largely write his column.)

Anything else you noticed changed on Jan 1?

The price of starbucks coffee stayed the same. They'll be releasing some new bills (probably in time for the solnal holiday) and they're coming out with a penny sized ship won coin.

I will gather no machine in Korea will be able to handle any of the new bills. It's been a year now since we got the fin-chun bill and I don't think the T-money pay stations accept the bills yet.

What upsets me that IHT is not easily available at newstands. Unless you go to MAJOR MAJOR area where there are foreigners (hotels, etc) you can't buy it. I mean I would spend 1300 for a daily...it ain't that much for what it provides.

When I went back to Canada on holiday, I totally forgot newspapers are thick and come in multiple sections. I got so used to reading the Korean english papers. IHT isn't usually that super hard to find if the guy is also selling the KH/KT.

My weekend reading is the weekend Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal. Those you have to go to the little store at some major hotels to pick up (or Kyobo books). Many times its sold out at Kyobo so I pop over to the Lotte Hotel.

Up in Ilsan I didn't see IHT to be bought. I wanted to subscribe but never got around to it. Morning, toilet & newspapers Very Happy - nothing beats that, except maybe newspapers & bathtub in the evening.

I travel a lot on business and often come home late, so maybe I would not be able to read them every day. But, subscription is cheap - like 1 time in Outback and you are set for months. Good value.

I wanted to subscribe to IHT but they don't deliver the same day to areas outside of Seoul, which is a bummer.

And quite often the news is a day late anyways.

Subscribing worked for me, but I guess not everyone else.

I was happy to read it free but I don't want to subscribe. I just need some kind of news tissue to go with my morning coffee. I'll start picking up the Korea Times. The KT and the KH both have exactly the same news but I think the KT has slightly better arts reporting, which is about the only thing that differentiates the papers. That and the KT realizes people plan their weekend on Friday and the KH waits until Saturday to tell you what you missed Friday night.

Oh yeah and the KT has an LA Times section on Saturday.

which is something that bedevils me. In Thailand you can get it the same morning in Chiang Mai which is much further than any point in Korrea

why cant these idiots do it here?

I don't know how far you are from Seoul, but in the past (in 2004) I had it delivered to me in Yongin, on the same day, around 5 or 6 AM in fact. Convenient, and a good bit of time reading daily, more if you like crosswords. I wouldn't mind a day late so much anyway. My friend used to have it delivered to him in Incheon, not sure if on time though. The IHT seems to be not for sale anywhere outside Seoul.

I haven't been to a Starbucks in over 3 years....

Coffee there is overpriced for the quality...

However, it does have a nice relaxing ambience to it at times...
