I heard this comedian mentioned, so I checked out some videos on youtube.
Just my opinion, not funny at all, boring and ridiculous...
Or do I need to see more where's he's actually funny?
I'd hate to think I'm misjudging a "genius".........................

Well, point me to something terrific. I just watched 3 or 4 things by him, a good 20 minutes, and it looked like crap to me.
I am boring and ridiculous. But I'm not the "great" Bill Hicks.... |

You need to hear or see some his full on rants. The guy was great. But he was very politcal and sometimes a bit subtle. Sort of a mellow Sam Kinison. Sometimes you had to think.
Not that you don't but some people prefer in your face humor! So don't take that as an insult.
I think the guy was pure unadultrated genius.

| One of his concerts called 'Relentless' is good if you can find a torrent for it. |

| Even though I don't like Hicks that much, he's not that bad. Denis Leary is a bit like Hicks (= loudmouth) and I think that you will like Leary's performance more. Try "No Cure for Cancer" and let us know what you think about it. |

| The problem with Hicks for alot of people is they're not getting that he is trying trying to tell you something while at the sametime as being funny. It bounces off alot of peoples heads or some people just don't get it or like it. I like him cause its comedy that challenges which I think we need more of. It shocking how much of his political material you could just change a couple names and insert into todays world and youd never know it was from 15 years ago. |

Bill Hicks was a good comedian. Then he died. Now he is a genius. If he was still alive, he would probably be co-starring in Dr. Doolittle 3 with Eddie Murphy.
The younger you die, the greater people seem to think you were. Just my view. |

I didn't think much of him at first after watching those old clips but after a bit more I found myself liking him more and more, especially this quote:
| Quote: |
| The world is like a ride at an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: Is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "Hey don't worry, don't be afraid ever, because this is just a ride." And we kill those people. "Shut him up. We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real." It's just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter, because it's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. |

Wow. Deep man....real deep.
Here I was thinking that Hicks' 'comedy' was for the challenged.
A vulgar gasbag. I certainly don't find his 'comedy' to be intellectual or stimulating; banal or crass would be more accurate. He is funny in the same way that some find poo funny.
Russel Peters, Ricky Gervais, Steven Wright, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert; these are not only funny men, but insightful and witty. |

| Bill Hicks is one of the greatest comedians to ever pick up a mic. As someone above said, "Relentless" is a good intro to his work - not too far out there and closer to traditional stand-up comedy. "Rant in E-Minor" and "Arizona Bay" were far more aggressive but also far better. |

I love how when you say you don't like something, some people automatically assume "you just don't get it." Like you're somehow deficient if you don't like it. Please just dig up the man's body and suck his dead d.ick. After that, drink some liquid drano and do the world a favour.
Yeah, that ride blurb was like... mediocre man...
I like me some Spalding Grey. His monologue on the making of "The Killing Fields" was amazing. |

Jajdude, you need to listen from beginning to end. You can't just listen to a little clip, because it's going to be out of context. A good comedian builds up, and so a lot of the humor is self-referential.
Try to download Rant in E Minor. I've heard that one at least 20 times and it's never any less funny.
The great thing about Hicks was that he had true optimism about the potential of humanity. His anger/comedy arose from the way that the powers that be stifle this potential.
The fact that boorish idiots like Demophobe didn't get it should tell you something about his humor. It's not necessarily obvious humor all the time, and a lot of the references are hard to understand. |

The guy complains about people thinking he is deficient then tells them to drink drano and do the world a favor. Kinda of a mixed message... |

Hey shifter... I thought you would have appreciated those lines, because I've seen a couple of Hicks clips and I was imitating his style of humour in the clips I saw.
Maybe that was too subtle for you and you just didn't "get it."
I'm sure the world would be a worse place if you drank drano. LOL at people taking me literally and calling me boorish.
That rules! |
