I found this excerpt to be most disturbing:
Quote: |
We learned that attenuating growth is feasible through high-dose oestrogen therapy. This treatment was performed on teenage girls in the 60s and 70s, when it wasn't desirable for girls to be tall, with no negative or long-term side effects.

Was this actually done in the U.S. to healthy young women? |

Yeah, that is rather repugnant...when people try to alter how children will appear for purely cosmetic reasons. I hated how some Korean parents would take their young children for unnecessary eyelid surgery. |

Parents in the U.S. have been giving children growth hormone injections for years because they don't want the embarrassment of having their children be smaller than their classmates.
If doctors are willing to alter growth for those reasons, then I think this has much more vailidity.
While I have mixed feelings about the ethics, I trust that the doctors were convinced that the family was loving and truly acting in the the best interest of their child and family. There seems to be no evidence to the contrary. And, frankly, I can't imagine the strain on a family caring for this type of child.
Of course, the bigger issue is how far we'll take it, which is why disability activists are so concerned. |
