http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_of_the_Netherlands

I can't say that my folks EVER exposed me to traditional dutch music. The only thing I know at ALL is wooden shoe dancing. That music very much a waltz but I'm not sure if it's traditional dutch
*you should have went with Dutch art....there are TONNES of great dutch artists.

If you just want to hear some dutch music (not at ALL traditional)...my cousin is quite an accomplished musician.

He's really quite brilliant!

Heya,
I'm not sure what exactly you meant by "traditional" but this site will let you play the songs that are on the page. They're all childrens' songs, so definitely work appropriate.

http://www.kennisnet.nl/po/leerkracht/vakken/muziek/kinderliedjes/

If you meant Christmas, then then there's a couple on there. "Speel Muziek" will let you play it, and "Bladmuziek" will show you the sheetmusic.

These are some Christmas songs I noticed:

Dag Sinterklaas
De zak van Sinterklaas
Nieuwjaarke zoete (New years song)
O Dennebom
O kom er eens kijken
Sinterklaasje bonnen bonne bonne
Sinterklaas kom maar binnen met je knecht
Sinterklaas kapoentje

I really hope it helped you out some way though. I'm also sorry that you can't download from the site, and I really hope that this wasn't a waste of time for you.

mhhh "Sinterklaas" is not "Santa claus" but "Saint Nicolas", his saint day is on the 6th of December, not the 25th

just a detail though

Doesn't get more traditional than this:

http://home.tiscali.nl/~ekorf/dances.html

Kapoentje: A capon (kapoen), with the diminutive "(t,s)je" ending (little), the Dutch add that to a lot of words. It's cute.

My Dutch family calls me "Kotje" /ko tyuh/

Quote:
Sinterklaas Kapoentje
Gooi wat in mijn schoentje,
gooi wat in mijn laarsje
dank u, Sinterklaasje.

The phonetic would be like this (remember that the "g" sound in Dutch is that gutteral sound...also: The "tje" basically means "little". It's pronounced as an aspirated "t+yi". I write it as chis because that's simpler, just less correct.)

Sinterklahs Ca-POON-chis
Gooee vhat IN mine SHOONchis
Gooee vhat IN mine LAHRchis
Dahn-kuh Sinter Klahs-yi

I could "do rae mi" out for you if you like. It's a very easy song.

Don't forget to dress up as Sinterklaas's 'helper', Zwarte Piet.

"Een kapoen" is a bratty kid

-tje makes it smaller and is mostly used to make things more cute, so basicly in English it is a very young bratty (naughty) kid.

Quote:

Sinterklaas Kapoentje
Gooi wat in mijn schoentje,
gooi wat in mijn laarsje
dank u, Sinterklaasje.

Direct english

Saint nicolas, you naughty little kid
Throw something in my small shoe
Throw someting in my little boot
Thank you, Saint Nicolas

Now that is a literal translation and does not capture the cuteness of the song

They use kapoentje to rhime with schoentje
It doesn't necesarily mean that saint nicolas is a bratty kid

This song is meant for 5 to 6 year olds to sing out loud.

Artist: Musical Youth Lyrics
Song: Pass the Dutchie Lyrics

This generation
Rules the nation
With version

Music happen to be the food of love
Sounds to really make you rub and scrub

I say: Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side
It a gonna burn, give me music make me jump and prance
It a go done, give me the music make me rock in the dance

It was a cool and lovely breezy afternoon
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)
You could feel it 'cause it was the month of June
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)
So I left my gate and went out for a walk
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)
As I pass the dreadlocks' camp I heard them say
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)

Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side
It a gonna burn, give me music make me jump and prance
It a go done, give me the music make me rock in the dance

...and so on.
