|
|
There are concerns in the U.S. that Korea's presidential elections next will give rise to a fresh wave of anti-American sentiment here.... the Roh Moo-hyun administration came to power by taking advantage of anti-American sentiment.... Considering that some 30,000 U.S. Forces Korea are still being stationed here, there is always the possibility of incidents like the deaths of the two schoolgirls in 2002 that can be turned against the U.S. presence here.

i think thats the key quote. A foreigner seen dropping a cigarette butt? Front page headlines and nationwide protests. All foreigners are american , after all. |

| Politicians are scum all over the world. Korean politicians are no different. I am sure that if they see a particular advantage in ratcheting up the Anti-Americanism to get elected, they will do so. |

| A fresh wave is certainly better than a stale wave. Don't hate the players, hate the game. |

Spliff, I care what they think because I living in their culture, but like you say, carry on as usual. I'm not here to push U.S. policy on them or off them, I'm here for the adventure, the culture and of course, the money.
This is straying from the topic, but if the U.S. military leaves Korea, will that really affect a foreign teacher's day to day life? |

Only would affect the blackmarket!
Given the state of world affairs (e.g., N. Korea), it's doubtful that the U.S. military presence would leave.
Also, did you know that in some areas (Daegu), the U.S. government provided air conditioning units to many public schools when a complaint was filed that the schools couldn't keep windows open because of the aircraft flying over? I guess the Korean government probably just told their citizens to "deal with it," whereas the U.S. used "diplomacy." |

| I would prefer a wave with some kind of basis, other than the inferiority complex carried by so many Koreans. That's not an excuse to hate America. |

Has anyone seen open anti-american protests in the streets?
I wonder how I would react if I saw such a thing.

If they do come, they will likely be next spring, the traditional time for the cranky left to get out and do its thing in this country. The nearest thing recently would be the ongoing anti-FTA marches around the country. |

You'd watch for a bit, then walk away.
You'd be an idiot to do much more.
I've seen the protests. I've seen it where thousands of guys are pulling down baracades and the shit is flying everywhere.
You don't want to be a part of that. |

| A senior Defense Department official said in August that the U.S. was in a hurry primarily because of anti-American sentiment in Korea, not just because of Koreas improved defense capability of the nation. That hints at irreversible damage to the alliance if politicians link such matters to Korean independence or getting the Americans out in the presidential election, just as some made capital from the death of two schoolgirls under the wheels of a U.S. army vehicle in the 2002 election. |
