I see the same class only once a week, and for forty minutes. It's a haggie but large classes, sometimes 25 kids or more. That's how Ninja stealth students, masters of the art of invisibility, have an advantage from the getgo. I met one today only after he emerged from his hide, and smiled. Who was this guy? Why was he smiling? He had been completely invisible for forty minutes. This takes skill and training, or perhaps he was self-taught. His smile was a smile of satisfaction at a job well done. He had hugged the curve on two wheels and pushed invisibility to the edge of the envelope yet again!

I don't recall ever having seen him, clearly. I recall him vaguely, and I've been at this haggie for 7 months, that's how I know he's good. And he's not alone.

By now you're asking yourself, 'which of my students have successfully remained undetected?'. The answer is you can't be entirely sure, but this might help.

This Ninja stealth student, master of the art of invisibility I (barely) encountered today (and his presence was like the remaining, barest filaments of wispy dreamsilk), as I mentioned gave himself away by his smile (from under the lid of a baseball cap pulled tightly down) of satisfaction at having attained sheer invisibility for forty minutes (once a week, four times a month, for seven months). How did he achieve this?

1. Maintain a stealth profile. The amazing thing was he was large for a ten year old. It helped that he wore a powder-skyblue, nylon shell windbreaker. The colour is soothing, pastel (who would suspect sky blue?) and the slick, nylon surface slips a teacher's hawk eye into next week like a waiter slipping on a barfspill.

His actual profile, under the slick shell, was 'middling'. Not full forward so that he was actually (but he was almost) resting on the desk, but in a runner's lean. This enabled him to use the person seated in the desk before him as a screen.

He also wore a powder-skyblue baseball cap with the long, duckbill brim pulled at a 45 degree downward slant that mimicked the forward lean of his head, and torso.

2. Remain imobile. He was like a powder-skyblue, humanoid iguana seated at a desk pretending to be a student (but actually a highest student graduate of the art of invisibility brotherhood, a group which remains largely unknown, unoticed, voluntary persona non grati, off the map, their whole bodies dark sunglasses).

He was probably doing other things that rendered him Mr Nobody but, obviously, I couldn't really notice.

Yes, there are many grey men out there. Many times I have what is called in this business " a class list". This magical item allows me to check the attendance of any and all students in my class. A wise old man living on a mountain, deep in India, taught me the secret art of checking attendance prior to the start of teaching. I now share this wonderful gift with the world.

*** Thoughts running through my mind (I must be bored to have actually responded to this OP's post. Man I need a life. )

Wow. I use an attendance sheet and still the ninjas surprise me. I'm on campus and some students (a group of them) say "hi teacher..your class was fun", so there I am thinking who the hel are they and what class are they talking about.

If you mention you don't recognize them...then you get that face.

University students are also masters of the black arts Capt. Kirk.
