|
|
I'me still reading as much as I can and trying to learn what I'm getting into and I've noticed on the 'jobs' board that the jobs frequently have vaiations in salary of as much as 500,000 KW (I hope I expressed that correctly....this still seems like Monopoly money to me).
I would expect these hogwan managers to keep pretty close tabs on what the 'market' was for paying foreign teachers. Can somebody suggest to me what accounts for the differences in salary I see?
Are the higher salaries
(1) not real
(2) due to management generosity
(3) due to management stupidity
(4) because perhaps that's what they have to pay to keep people in those particular schools.
Reason I ask is because if it's true that a reasonably frugal teacher can save anything over 1,000,000 KW, then that extra half mill that some of these schools (or the ads anyway are quoting would all go into the savings pot. |

Hmm, I think it really varies. There are so many jobs, hagwon/school/uni, that their reasons can go anywhere from being cheap b@stards, to simply not having all that much money, and taking a shot in the dark.
Anyway, if it's your first time coming, I would not accept anything less than either 2.0 with an apartment subsidized, or 1.8 with an apartment completely paid for. |

| that's what I was thinking. I know we're dealing with individuals but I also know what it's like to deal with Koreans from many years in direct sales over here in US. They never 'give' anything away regardless of whether I think I got a good deal or not. |

1. Usually the higher than normal salaries are real but you'll be working more hours than normal or the job will be unusual in some way. These jobs sometimes are a scam so you really have to do your research.
2. NO
3. NO
4. Exactly, some of the schools that have higher than normal salaries have less than optimal conditions and are trying to compensate for that.
A lot of things go into how much you earn. Supply and demand at the time you apply, current events, when they see your picture and find out what you look like, your experience, your ability to negotiate, etc.
The amount of money that you can save depends on how you live your life. I've met people that left with no savings at all and I've met people that have saved almost everything.
The main thing is, do your research well. A lot of people come to Korea with false expectations and are very surprised. |
