I just posted this question in the Visa Run Forum, but I think more people read this forum.

So, here is the question: Has anyone stayed at a traditional Japanese inn? Wednesday afternoon I am gong to good old Fukuoka, and I will come back here Saturday morning.

I have stayed in the Sunlite Hotel, and that was pretty good, but this time I am thinking of staying in a traditional style hotel. It will be more expensive I am sure, but my employer is giving me 250,000 for this trip, and what ever it cost me, it cost me.

Yes, she also paid for the ticket

Go to:
Sumiyoshi Ryokan (established 1903)
2-5-19sumiyoshi, Hakata-ku
tel +18-92-291-051
It is fantastic, reasonably priced and right next to Canal City.

jinks, thank you for your information. I just spent over 2 hrs on the internet and was bombarded with lots of information, but I could not find the place you mentioned. I kept getting links that would not work.

You said this was fantastic. I am looking for a place with hot springs, and a complete japanese experience. Is this what you had? And also, did you make a reservation when you got to the airport?

Thanks again.

You could try a cube hotel for a complete Japanese experience. I stayed at a men's only one that had a sauna on the top floor. Can't remember the name but pretty reasonable. 6000yen/night.

No, it was not a hot springs type place. It was a small inn in downtown Fukuoka, we went there because everywhere else was booked out. It was a tatami mat room with big comfy quilts, bean pillows and green tea on tap. The bathroom was adequate, but basic. It was wintertime when we were there, a little bit of snow and the rooms were equipped with those snuggly low tables you put your feet under with a heater under the tabletop and quilted sides that keep the heat in. Very Japanesish, especialy as it was my first time there. Last time I did what Matthews_world suggests and stayed in a capsule hotel - that was fun too (though not quite as cheap) - and very, very Japanese!

The capsule was 3899 yen, I think, near Canal Mall. Right on the canal near the nightclub district. The COOL, winning thing was the mogyauk before bed. Then, after squeezing like a human bit of toothpaste out of the capsule in the morning, to the mogyauk again. Ah, Planet Fukuoka and the cryosleep capsules/torpedo tubes.

Thanks all. I am going tomorrow to Fukuoka. I will write about where I went when I get back.

My boss booked room for me and I asked her to un-book it. (she did) She was going to pay 7000 yen a night. I said thanks, but I wanted to stay in a traditional in with a hot-springs. She told me that the travel agent said it was not safe!

When I get off the plane I will ask the information desk to help me search. If not, I will stay some place else and just go to a hot spring after I dump off my visa stuff Thursday morning.

She is going to give me up to 280,000 for this trip. She bought the ticket, 417,000 won. I think that was high, but I heard prices went up.

I just have to save my receipts and give them to her when I get back here.

Great news......now the bus all the way from Gangneung goes to the airport!
