Well I've been accepted at Macquarie and they're giving me 4 credit points for my CELTA. I guess I'll be drinking a lot less and reading a lot more in a couple of months. |
Is that an online thing? If so, can I have the details of it please?
Thanks. |

Whatever you do do not take LING946 - Leading and Managing Language Programs. The professor is a twit, the material is boring, and there are a ton of errors in the course materials. |
Which courses would you recommend? |

SLA (ling912 I think) is good, but that first essay nearly ripped the nuts right off of me. |

Yeah me too, but it is required and you have no choice anyhow... My other elective course is going to be pragmatics. I'm taking it this fall and cannot remember the unit code. after that I start work on my dissertation. |

It's required for the MAppLing (TESOL) but not for the MAppLing. |

Zed, I didn't realize that.
Has anyone taken the Pragmatics course? I'm looking to get a good supplementary text this summer and get ahead of the course if you have taken this course please let me know what the assigned text is so I do not buy it. Recommendations appreciated. |

I just finished my M.A. Applied Linguistics from USQ through distance education and applied for a university job in Taiwan just to see what would happen.
This is the response I got back from the hiring committee at the university - I am so angry that some schools and countries are refusing to recognize Distance M.A. degrees - $15, 000 CDN later!
Quote: |
"We must follow The Ministry of Education guidelines for faculty employment, especially regarding the verification of degrees.
The MOE stipulates that the master's degree may not include more than 1/3 of the credits earned via distance-learning.
The bulk of the credits must be earned in residence, and at a minimum the master's degree candidate must be in the country where the degree-granting institution is conducting classes for not less than 9 months.
Therefore, your master's degree doesn't meet the criteria." |

don't get pissed at the school, they have no choice. It's the MOE, that hasn't got a clue. |

Bump!
Well, I am nearing the end of the first semester at MQ. 4 more to go. Not sure I shouldn't have gone for the USQ MA, it's cheaper. The first couple of essays were really hard, but after I had acquainted myself with the new terminology and the APA writing style it got easier. I think I will take three courses next term, I have begun to realise that there is a lot more reading assigned than is absolutely necessary. It is actually interesting stuff, and not that hard. If you have the bucks, do it. If not, well.....
Not sure you couldn't be a great teacher without it. |
What is the APA writing style? |

APA (American Psychological Association) style is the standard for all social science papers. You and I are history majors, so we would have used the MLA style which is more common in the humanities. APA doesn't use endnotes or footnotes, it credits authors in brackets in the text as they are cited and depends more upon the list of references for citations. It's actually easier to use. Here is a link to an APA style guide online:

Actually they are all easy to use once you've installed endnote which integrates well with office 2003.
Macquarire provides a freedownload. |

Well an online degree is fine as long as its from an accredited university. Personally I think I would rather have a degree from an accredited correspondence university from the United States, Canada, Australia etc than a degree from a Thai university. If you want to stay in Korea for a long time it would be better to have a Masters degree from a western university and even back home whatever country your from I wonder what they would think of a Thai degree that was cheapcheapcheap. |

I just spent a lovely 4 hours at a symposium on distance education....wow, there were by far more problems mentioned than suggestions, and more nay-sayers than promoters....I'll super busy now, but will explain later.
