my mum starting saving to visit me before i even left!
just wondered from you longtermers which is the best month to play host, in terms of weather/events.
Question

is chusok too busy?

I think mid-April is the best time of year as far as weather goes. Nice time for walking around without sweating or freezing to death.

Don't forget the yellow dust mid-March through mid-April thereabouts. Not good on the allergies.

I'd go for autumn. It's quite beautiful and seasonal here around Oct, Nov.

I would say either, really. Is yellow dust really such a bad problem in early spring? I've been here three years and only recall one day I thought the yellow dust was bad enough that I actually noticed it.

Chuseok is a disappointing time. Everyone leaves Seoul and spends it with their families. Seoul is a ghost town and not enough things are open. Plus things will be more expensive.

I recommend April/May or September. This last fall was great, but I remember the weather last fall being lousy.

April, May and early June are really good. Cherry blossom festivals begin April 1 on the south coast and gradually move north. Avoid late June, July (rainy season) and August (hot).

Mid Sept. to late October is also great. But avoid Chuseok. Travelling is horrendous because of traffic--and things are closed.

I had a holiday in Korea during the last week of September and was sweating in Seoul, Daegu and Pusan.

While I agree with the other poster about Seoul and other big cities being a ghost town during Chuseok you also have to consider that you want to have some time off to spend with your mother when she comes.

I think Chuseok is the perfect time. Weather's nice. Yeah stuff is closed on one of the three days but the other two days are normal and the weather's nice.

If you looking for good weather, it hardly matters.You are here for a year, thus seeing every season and type of weather anyway. If you want to see celebrations of any sort, dont waste your time worrying about it! i have still to see Koreans celebrate anything with any enthusiasm Sad
