Lee Min-Young is finally bringing the issue of spousal abuse to public discussion. This can only be a good thing.

Strange that when I saw her photo on the front of one of the sporting papers the other day and asked a Korean colleague what it was all about, he replied that she was in hospital for a nose job. Now I know why.

Oh...but they just had a storybook (ON TV!!!) wedding....

I asked my friend why they were being shown married on tv and she said, "because they are famous, they have to!" They even had a press conference after...

Anyways, I hope that sucker gets jail time for beating up his wife.

Man, that's so typically Korean. Give you the basic info without telling you all the details as to save their national "pride." My first year here, I asked someone what the anmas were and they said "it's for massages." Always just half the story with these people.

But he said he had never beaten or kicked her unprovoked.

Oh! Well, why didn't he just say so. Then it's okay. Confused

So typical.
This Lee Min-Young-Lee Chan dispute/abuse was plastered all over Korean news, Internet, message board and other media for last four days and this foreign guy accuses Koreans of "Always just half the story with these people"?" Freaking unbelievable!!!

Yeah, right, as getting a nose job deserve front page in Korean news!
And all Koreans have obligations to inform foreigners of all their sins, transgression, warts and all.

Calm down little korean man, I didn't mean to hurt your insecurities with an astute observation

This is why I said little korean man. I didn't pick it at will. Instead of saying "some poster" he has to say "some foreign guy." So, so what? I'm some foreign guy and he's some little korean guy. What's all the fuss about?

Speaking of famous people not getting jail in Korea reminds me of OJ Simpson and Michael Jackson not getting jail in USA.

Good question. You have to wonder why some people marry their Significant Other after hearing them complain. While there are 2 sides to a story when 1 side is complaining so much it makes you wonder about their intelligence.

I had one Korean co-worker who would complain about her then BF now hubbie. He had no romance. There was no passion. Yet she married him. She was one of the finest looking women I have ever worked with, and nice to boot. After returning from the honeymoon she complained that he told her she needed to lose weight if she ever wanted him to take her away on a vacation. Now they are unhappily married with a child. Why marry someone who keeps you down?

It reminds me of how incredibly stupid a co-worker back home was. She would go on and on about how there was no passion in her relationship with her SO. He was lazy. A slob. The list went on. She was planning their divorce before the wedding even took place. Call me crazy but that should be a BIG warning sign not to marry someone. Now they are unhappily married with two kids. (Guess what, having kids doesn't automatically make a marriage work. What a surprise!) Why marry someone you don't love and can't live with?

At least it proves that some stupidity is universal.

While I'm inclined not to believe the guy I have to say that based on behaviour I've seen here that's nevertheless quite plausible.

Being unhappy is a large and integral part of the Korean cultural experience. They even have a word, 한, for the special and unique type of Korean sadness that only they can experience.

In addition to that, the endurance of suffering is woman's lot in the world, and by enduring suffering at the hands of a cruel man with a quick temper, she can commune with her ancestors in a way like no other. She can also become closer to her living female relatives, and finally have a story to share when they all gather together for the autumn kimchi making session. She can get commiserative aigos all around and take her place as a woman among her peers.

Its institutionalized, culturalized, socialized victimization. I'm also making most of this stuff up on the fly, so take it as you will.

I've also heard that han has four distinct seasons. Mind you, I'm making this stuff up with my fly open, so you can take it any way you like (but right now I'm lying). Wink

Sounds spot on to me.

Just like those hiking suits and Darth Vader hats.
