Master's or connections. Connections are very important. Pay scale is from 1.6 to maybe 4.0/month if you have a PhD.

4.0/mil with a PhD.....but with a Master's it ranges.

So basically you need a Master's or you need to know someone to get in...

In terms of hours and pay, most unis these days are going the way of the hagwon. Compared to the days of uni gigs being the Holy Grail job, hours are shooting up, wages are dropping like a stone, and vacation is nearly negligent (because you are expected to teach "camps").

There are exceptions, but they are a group that is getting smaller and smaller.

If you really want a uni job, it doesn't hurt to apply. Many schools get left hanging when people back out.

Being able to make it for an in-person interview counts for a lot, so you have that going for you.

Where I work, there are only two M.A. holders on staff and we have 13 foreign instructors. Our school is pretty good as far as contracts go.

If you can get a job at a university or even a university language institute, it helps if you want to move up to a better school the next year. At least, it does at my school.

A lot of unis want three years experience for B.A. holders, but like I said, it doesn't hurt to apply. Just make sure you keep records of where you've applied, so if someone calls you, you know who they are.

Make sure your cover letters look professional and that they include the name of the school you're applying to ... and sign the letter. Also, your letters of reference should be signed and on letterhead if possible. You wouldn't believe the applicants that don't get a second look simply because their cover letters were crap or their applications were incomplete.

From my experience working on hiring committees, my advice is to apply to as many as you can. Someone will call you back.

A short browse through the job ads would provide you with this information.
