i rarely get a download rate of over 20 these days. it's really annoying because it's taking me days to download a 700mb file! (even if there are hundreds of seeds/downloaders)
i usually use azureus. i downloaded utorrents to try and i'm getting similar rates.
i think it's something to do with ports/firewalls......i'm not bad with computers, but i'm not good, either. plus, my OS is in Korean, so i don't want to go around messing with any settings. my husband isn't much help....he's hopeless with computers.
any tips? i'd really appreciate it! |

You could use uTorrent instead of Azureus. That won't make your speeds faster but uTorrent is a lot easier to configure than the complex Azureus.
Are you connectable? Azureus/uTorrent will show if you have a good downloading/uploading connection at the bottom of the screen. If you are connecting from behind most kinds of firewalls or routers you may have connection problems. This is to do with opening ports and configuring firewalls. The FAQ in the Azureus Help menu can help you with that. But with a Korean OS you are facing quite a maze.
Get a different ISP! I used LG Xspeed in my old apartment and the D/L speeds were pretty sluggish. Now I have Hanafos in my new apt and D/L speeds are amazing! |

I suspect this is exactly the problem! i read the azureus wiki about it thoroughly, but like i said, i don't know where to start....

nope, no router.
i just wanted to post that utorrent is giving me much higher and more consistent rates than azureus and it's not slowing my computer down as much. the rates still aren't as high as i'd like them (it's probably my ISP), but i can't watch this stuff at the rate i download anyway. sistersarah's happy again! |

when you open u torrent in the bottom right hand corner next to your upload and download speeds, there is an icon. It's probably either yellow or green, if its yellow you need to open a port if its green your probably about as fast as your gonna get. Are your DL speeds capped?
I've gotten DL speeds around 200 kbs |

thanks cerebroden. it's green, so i guess the rates are as fast as they can be. most rates hover around 30 but sometimes they get up over 100. like i said, i can't watch this stuff fast enough anyway, so i'm pretty pleased.
thanks everyone! |

If you go to a speed test site
http://speedtest.net/
and run the test (choose the server in Japan) and let me/us know the result, we might be able to take this further.. |

thanks for the that link. that was neat.
here are my results:
download: 90kb/s
upload: 404 kb/s
latency 518 ms
so, what exactly does that mean? |

If the results you pasted are true then it means your internet connection sucks. Are you using cable? DSL?
If you can, try it again with a different server (or two) and compare the results, try one on the west coast of the US, like Seattle.
Basically your first set of results looks like you're download speed should be limited to ~10KB/sec, which is only slightly faster than dialup. So I'm skeptical that your connection is really that slow. Chances are that you just chose a bad server to test with.
Your connection to some places on the internet will be faster than others, what I'm trying to determine here is the maxiumum capacity of your internet connection. |

These internet speed tests are never accurate but if you try the server in L.A. you should see a big difference. |

upload: 645 kbps
310ms
that changes things, right? |

Yes, this changes things, it means that your connection is capable of faster speeds, you just need to tweak things to achieve them.
Firstly, the default settings in azureus should be tweaked a bit.
According to your latest speed tests, you should be able to download at ~150kB/sec and upload around 50, but you might even be able to go higher than this.
With bittorrent, your upload speed has an impact on your download speed for 2 reasons. The first is that the more you share, the more you get. The way that the protocol has been written, people who upload more get a higher priority to download from others. The second is that using all (too much) of your upload capacity actually chokes your download capacity. So the best setting is about 70-80% of your total capacity.
Based on your numbers above, that means you should throttle your upload to about 30 or 40K/sec. However there's a good chance that you can actually to better than the numbers above.. So we'll shoot high and work down if it doesn't work.
In Azuereus preferences, under transfer, set your global maximum upload speed to 75Kb/sec.
Also increase your maximum upload slots per torrent to about 15.
After you've done that, try a torrent and see if there's any difference. |
