How can you reach neginners when to use to and when to use for?

I teach them that it's their choice--many times, it's acceptable to use either one.

But then I drill, drill, drill into their little heads that "to" signals using the infinitve form (ie, to eat, to sleep, to jump, to dance) and that using "for" means that they will need to add -ing to the verb (for eating, for sleeping, for jumping, for dancing).

Sometimes they get it and sometimes they're tired/bored/not paying attention and we have to practice ad nauseum (meaning until I"m ready to puke).

Don't try to answer that question! (How the heck does it even get asked?!)

Deal with prepositions when they come up. Uses vary.

Avoid overgeneralizations.

We don't learn through itemizing lists of contexts. Why should they?

actually I think "for" answers why something is being done and "to" is just doing something.
