Hello. I have a couple questions regarding this process- of the school paying for return airfare. I work at a public school, but my bf works at a hogwan. I was wondering if the school/hogwan actually buys and books the ticket for me at the end of my contract, or if I just show them the amount for a one way flight home (proving by showing the website,) and they just deposit the $ into my account.

What is your experience with this?

My concerns are:

1. I'm not sure that I will be flying directly home after the end of my contract- and may travel for a while....

2. I am looking into taking a teaching position in Japan- in which case I'm worried this will greatly offend my boss/ co-workers, as all I hear from them is how much they hate the Japanese. With my bf's boss- I know that he would be very offended by this- for 1. he thinks that no one would have reason to want to leave his hogwan, and 2. he really really hates the Japanese.

Any advice people?

Save yourself a pile of grief.

Buy a REFUNDABLE ticket to your home. Give copies of the receipt and e-ticket to your co-teacher. They will submit the funds into your account sometime in the last day or so of your contract.

Refund your ticket and do what you want.

BE AWARE that many travel agencies have a 30 day (or longer) hold on refunds for cash purchases.

The best way to do this is to go direct to your favorite airline rather than a travel agent. They USUALLY give refunds within 3-7 working days for cash purchases (ask before you buy about restrictions and delays)

OR

you can cancel the ticket and use the refund to buy the tickets to your new destination and get the difference refunded.

Also/alternatively, If you use a credit card you will get the charges canceled within 3 working days of cancelling your ticket.

The same would probably work best for your BF as well. Keep in mind that if the hakwon buys the ticket if will probably be on their credit card and he WON'T be able to get a cash refund or make flight changes if they do (credit card purchases just get credited back to the card).

I'm just worried that it will be difficult to find a one way ticket that is refundable. The airlines I've searched seem to state that this is a difficult procedure- and they will not always refund your ticket if given valid claims for wanting to cancel. But I'm still doing research on this option, nonetheless.

Does anyone else have previous experience on how their flight was paid? Or am I totally screwed?

Go to (call or visit) the airline (any airline / your prefered airline) ticket office (NOT THEIR WEBSITE).

They sell refundable tickets all the time - they are called unrestricted, refundable tickets. Business clients buy millions of them every week - they can't afford to be locked into a ticket they can't change if their travel circumstances change and they need to do it on short notice.

Korean Air for example will sell you a refundable ticket but there is a 30k won service charge for a refund (20k to change the ticket). Cathay, NW, PAL, EVA, China Air, Quantas, Air Canada, AA and others ALL have them with similar small handling fees.

I have personally done this many times at both public and private schools.

As an alternative, you can let the school buy the ticket. The ONLY problem is that it will probably be paid for on their credit card and you will NOT be able to make any changes or get a refund.
