Hey, I have spoken to a few schools and I know that a lot of them offer housing through the schools. Today I spoke to 2 schools that said they have like a housing agent that you can work with, they will pay the key deposit and then give me a housing allowance. Which is the better option? How much should I need for the housing allowance?
This topic may be on here somewhere else, but I couldnt find it...
And if you have time...I am a female, American, certified English teacher with over one year experience. I have a BA, majoring in English and minoring in Business. I prefer to teach adults, or ultimately an editing/publishing position. If you have ANY advice for me, let me know!

Thanks for whatever you can give me!

Meredith

Well, where will you go and live/teach?

For example, in Ilsan (satelite city of Seoul) an apartment overlooking Lake Park with a Japanese garden on the top, 5-10 minutes walking to La Fest with all the happenings and buses, subway is going to be 10,000,000 won to 20,000,000 won deposit + say 300,000 per month rent + utils.

Some other places 10 mil deposit + 300K per month.

Or a big deposit and no monthly paymet.

If you go to country side like Paju for example (north of Ilsan, close to DMZ) you can get a house for 15 milion with no monthly rent (its older house and its like village area).

Many variables you didn't mention...

Sorry, I am planning on living/teaching in Seoul. I know it is more expensive but I am a big city type of gal.

Ilsan, Seoul, Suwon, Bundang is pretty much all same pricing except Gangnam area. Its all one metro area and everything is connected so its all Seoul more or less. 1 hour commute is normal for either meeting friends or going to work, shopping, etc. For me personally everything up to 2 hours is an easy hop - gotta put yourself into this mindset but its gonna come when you get here.

10,000,000 won + 300,000 per month can get you an older one-room style housing in not so great and super-popular area (for example in north-east part of seoul, seonbuk-gu). For something better, you may find...

If you can let us know the amounts your employer is offering we can let you know probably what you can expect. Why they don't provide housing themselves so you don't need to worry about that?

Ilsan is not too bad.
When traffic is not too bad, it's about 25 minutes to Shinchon/Hongdae.
The air is cleaner, housing cheaper, and it has a decent expat community.

Also, subway line number 3 connects to there. It's about 40 minutes to Myeong Dong and a little more to go to Apkujeong.

One of the schools is offering only like 2.1 million won, the other has an hourly rate and they said I should be able to bring in about 2.5-3 million each month. I am used to the hourly rate thing, but it doesnt seem to be as common there as in other places.

In your opinion, what should someone with my degree, certification, and experience level expect as a salary? Is it just better to take an offer with housing so I dont have to worry about it?

I appreciate any help, I am definitley coming in March, but there is so much out there it is hard to decide what the best way to go is.
