If you have worked a full term at a public school, please enlighten me.
I am thinking about teaching for a public school. I have not have any experience with this, so I was wondering how severance worked.
For example, If I were to work starting February, do I need to be physically present February 1st (or whatever starting date was) to receive severance? or can I leave before the new school year starts? (During december break)? Do any public schools start in march?
Also, what are the pros/cons of working in elementary, middle and high schools? How many other foreign teachers do you work with (if you work in the public system)?
Thanks a bunch!

| Most public school will have you doing some kind of winter camp- you will not have 2 months of winter vaction- unless you just get extremely lucky. |

During your first year of employment you have to work until the end date stated on your contract or you will not receive severance.

If you start any time before 2 March it would be good timing, as that's the first day of the school year.
You'll probably be the only foreign teacher at the school.
Do you like 6-12-year-olds, 13-15-year-olds, or 16-18-year-olds? That should answer your question about what level to teach. Just remember that their mental ages will be well below their western counter-parts. |

???
Theres the one-year Korean age factor & the social effect of being sexually segregated in schools, but a lot of kids here are very bright.
Theres an element of innocence but I hope youre not assessing their "mental age" on their ability to express their thinking in english. What on earth do you mean? |

So ie- if the start date: 2/1 end date: 12/22 (as an example), I would be able to leave 12/22 and get full severance, right?
Sorry I have to make it literal; I just want to make (absolutely) sure.

The first day must vary from school to school (or maybe different for elem/middle/high schools?). I think I asked some kids today, and they said they're school started in about 3 weeks.
Normally, I would say that I like high school kids, but the ones that I have met in korea are EXTREMELY self conscious (almost akward). Maybe others have better experience? I have good experience with the age 10-14 (korean age). They may not have the greatest knowledge of English usage, but they seem to be MUCH more outgoing. I also like college students, but I know that kind of gig is hard to get.
THANKS PEOPLE!! Any additional information is welcomed! |

Severance is paid when you complete a full year of work, so, using your example of 1st Feb - 22 Dec, then no, you will not be eligible to receive severance.
