I know I've seen something about this before, but when I did a search I got 700 posts, mostly contracts for review.

I'm wondering how often paid holidays are included as a benefit. Not vacation days, but the Korean national holidays. I keep reading that no one should bother accepting contracts without certain basics, like 10 days vacation, 3-5 sick days, etc. But how often do hagwons actually pay for holidays? And if they don't, but I get the day off, am I expected to make the hours up or is it deducted from my pay?

I just got offered a job that has a pretty bad contract so I'm going to keep looking, but I want to be realistic: I know I can't get everything, and if paid holidays isn't standard it won't be a deal-breaker for me.

Thanks.

You should get the National Korean Holidays off, and they should be paid. That's how it works at my hogwon, and many others that I know of. Mind you, I have heard of places like Wonderland, that will ask you to come in on Holidays. I have also heard of places that will count those National holidays as your vacation days. While others will ask you to make up those classes on a Saturday.

If you have any doubts, ask current teachers who work there what they have experienced. Personally, I wouldn't work for a place that doesn't offer paid holidays, it is just another way for them to skim a few bucks from their teachers, and then you can expect to be skimmed a few more bucks here and there. Keep looking.
