Good riddance.

A US marine has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for raping a local woman in the Philippines last year.
The sentence was handed down to Lance Corporal Daniel Smith in a Manila courtroom for the rape of the woman in a van at a former US navy base.
Three other defendants, Lance Corporals Keith Silkwood and Dominic Duplantis and Staff Sergeant Chad Carpentier, were all cleared of rape.
Smith, 21, from St Louis, Missouri, had said the sex was consensual.
The attack took place at the former US naval base of Subic Bay, west of Manila, in November last year.
The marines had been held in custody at the US embassy, after the US refused to hand them over until the end of the trial.
The defendants were stationed in Okinawa, Japan, but had just finished manoeuvres in the Philippines when the attack occurred. |

Im hugely against rape, obviously. But 40 years seems harsh, if only because that is longer than a lot of people get for murder... |

It should be a mandatory life sentence and so should murder as well as: child molestation, kiddy porn, theft over $1 million and a few others. |

good. but i can't help wondering...
How much do Phillipinos get for the same offence? punishing a member of the american military seems to be a crowd pleasing nationalistic pastime these days.
Imagine if korea had the power to try and lock up G.I's? they'd go nuts with it... you'd have 20 korean rapists let off with a wink and they'd incarcerate the GI for so much as brushing against a korean woman in the street. |

And the soldiers know that so they should behave accordingly. I'm sorry, but when you're in another country you behave yourself or you be prepared to do the time.
I have no sympathy for foriegners who get busted smuggling drugs and I definitly have no sympathy for a guy convicted of rape. |

WOW, never took you for a right-winger. Almost reminds me of the "Kill a Commie for Mommy" types. |
That's why current ideas of left and right dont work any more. Its perfectly possible to be, say, tough on crime, yet liberal on drugs and gay marriage and abortion, financially conservative, yet anti military intervention. Left and right just doesnt describe the complexity of peoples positions, especially if they are real independant thinkers and not just towing a party line on every issue. I certainly dont fit into any mould. |

So do you "behave accordingly" when in a homophobic country? |
I don't visit countries where my "lifestyle choice" is treated as a crime and activily punished. But if I did find myself in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, you're damn straight (no pun intended) I wouldn't frolic as I do in Thailand or other places.
Again, I don't feel bad for rapists, I know that many on this board sympathize with rapists, believing that women use it as a weapon against men, but I find it abhorrent.
And yes left and right don't apply to me. I register as Libertarian Liberal on those stupid charts. I just feel that the most severe acts against other humans (rape, murder) should be the most severly punished, and those that don't directly effect others (drugs, sodomy) shouldn't be prosecuted at all. |

It is harsh. A life sentence, with parole, is only 25 years in Canada.
Karla Homolka got, what, 12 years, and she helped he husband rape and kill several girls, including her own sister (most Canadians agree that she should still be in jail, though).

One more step towards their sainthood, I guess. |

Would you portray yourself as a Red Tory and are you from Britain or somewhere else in the Commonwealth?
Take care.
