Happy New Folks...it came to light for me the other day. I got a car and I was waiting at a red light to turn left. And as Im waiting a car comes up in the right hand line, goes to the front of the line and cuts in to the left. I know this happens all the time, but it hit me! Koreans are just cheaters.

-I play hockey, and the cherry picker is always a Korean.
-I watch my kids play soccer, the idea of offside is a foreign concept to them.
-the love hotels and how married folk use them to cheat.
-the brothels, for the married man
-remember two years ago (it could have been last year, can't remember) when about 500 high school students went down for cheating on their big November exam. Parents and teachers were part of it too

Those are just a few examples i can think of, but man, this is one cheating society. Why? Whats up? Would really like to know what you would think about this...

I think the competitive nature of Koreans that borders on the ridiculous might have something to do with it.

Heh heh....walking home from a new years party last night, in my neighborhood of haeboncheong, I see some ritzy white guy, probably a diplo, accusing his wife of...dun dun dun! Cheating. I really wanted to just hide behind a tree and listen, sounded like a soap opera.

I've wondered about this a lot, too. You can also point to the college students automatically graduating as an example, as well as the recent news that foreign language high schools were systematically fudging grades to make, for example, a 60% appear as an A on a report card, to get high school students into Ivy League schools.

As a basic example, the students cheat obsessively. I don't remember if my classmates cheated so much when I was young, because I was really oblivious and a bit of a space cadet, but it is certainly like second-nature in my classes here. Students will look at their neighbor's paper all the time, even when I'm looking directly at them.

Yes maybe, but not everyone is that competitive. It just amazes me. Some guy thinks its ok to cut right in the front of traffic, or some guy doesnt mind that his teamates are busting their ass playing defence in hockey while he is 20 feet off waiting for a long pass.

What losers!

So what ends up happening...one of two things, kill or be killed. I guess i would rather die! Confused

Ohhh!!! Isn't that exasperating? The best way to stop them from doing that is, if you have small enough classes, just take some manila folders and use them as dividers.

Better not let bjonothan, the apostrophe nazi, see that mistake. He has nothing better in his life to do than come here and be a pedantic ass. Right, bjonothan?

Cheating is commonplace because women here are under so much pressure from their families to get married that they marry someone they don't love.

More examples of cheating,

1) drivers on the roads driving through red lights.

2) line cutting at the train stations & post offices (especially by old ladies)

3) On airplanes, we're told to stay in our seats upon arrival until the plane comes to a full stop. However, I often see Koreans ignoring this rule to get their carry-on bags from the overhead compartments so they can get off of the plane first. You can see how irritated the flight attendants get.

Cheating is a part of every culture. Let's see: Enron, an ex-president getting his nob polished in the oval office, a current president whose father bribed his way into law school, need I go on.

Human beings are dishonest and we take shortcuts. Koreans are no exception and no worse than anywhere else.

True, but the men also marry someone they don't love, too. That's why they go to brothels. I saw a girl moaning to her boyfriend on the subway. She was loud and people were looking. No wonder some men cheat if that is what they end up marrying!

It sure is. The kids don't seem to realize puzzles and games are meant for fun so they copy and cheat at those. Never mind tests, they'll cheat at an activity that means next to nothing.

The brothels are a hold over from old times. When people say Korea has a traditional culture, this is one example about what they're talking about. A housewife for the older generation of Koreans was just a servant. Someone to produce a son, clean the house, cook dinner and take care of the kids. Love? What's that? So, it was okay to fool around at the brothels.

Fortunately, with the younger generation of Korean men, love and respect are becoming a part of relationships with women. But, until Korean women get organized and complain hard enough, don't expect the brothels to disappear overnight.
