On said page, there is an exercise showing how to ask where people are from. Said exercise has "ethnic" people with "ethnic" looks. The names are ethnic as well but are usual names except for the Chinese man. He is a pilot and his name is "Wong Wei". I didn't know what to do with that so I ignored it. The students talked it but I'm not sure what they said. |

dude, first thing i thought was that Wang was a very common family name and Wei was usually the first or second element in a two-syllable given name.
about a minute later i got it. |

Exploring English cracks me up sometimes. How about Otis' voice on the tapes. It just doesn't seem to fit somehow... |

Just wait until you get to Exploring English 6 when Peter crashlands in Africa and is picked up by natives. They make the passengers take off their clothes and get in a pot of water and he thinks they are cannibals. Turns out it's actually an "authentic experience" resort hotel and they're taking a hot bath.
AND A LESSON IS LEARNED BY ALL. HURR HURR. |

When the US EP-3 Elint plane was forced down on Hainan Island in 2001 by the Chinese, the name of the Chinese pilot who was killed was Wang Wei. |

I know I'm being somehow ridiculous here, but I don't get it. |

Sure, I'll explain.
1) A name of "Wrong Way" for a pilot is ungood in any case. It infers the person is a slow thinker or unreliable.
2) When we make fun of Chinese speaking people, we tease them about dropping R's or mixing R's and L's like in "Flesh Flish". The word "Wong" looks like the word "Wrong" misspoken by a Chinese speaker. |
