Quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A woman who competed in a radio stations contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroners office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the Hold Your Wee for a Wii contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

I can't see how anyone could think that doing this would be a good idea.

Quote:
They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy, said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. They told us if you dont feel like you can do this, dont put your health at risk.

How many of these people were medically qualified to determine what the risk would be for them personally? I think almost any doctor would advise against it.

Quote:
I was talking to her and she was a nice lady, Ybarra said. She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for kids.

Can you imagine having to explain to people how your mother died?

That is pretty amazing the station manager OKed that one.

My favorite radio contest remains the Throw a Wienie in a Garbage Can following Lorena Bobbit's escapade with her husband's wienie.

Yeah, this is plainly STUPID. But even more stupid, on the part of the radio station -- who should be held liable. In particular, in light of how much the medical establishment has publicized this medical condition. Articles on it everywhere and I being an athlete have particular awareness of this problem. Too many food tables on too many marathons. Becomes not a test of endurance but of stomach size....

I would like to see more judicial oversight in this area. Seems America in particular is too full of all this stuff your face to set a record, win a game show, let us enjoy your shamism.....

Just curious, On the Other Hand:

did you intend to provoke such grandiose, antiAmerican generalizations when you started this thread? or were you merely interested in posting a human interest story about a particular incident?

Uhh no. Ddeubel can take full credit for the descent into anti-Americanism. What's really unfortunate is that he sullied an otherwise decent post in which he had been using his background in athletics to bring some technical insight to the topic.

I take full credit for the anti-Americanism or more pointedly, the cultural commentary on the present American mindset.

But I won't digress and will leave it where it is. I really don't care who the biggest loser is, but Americans without a doubt enjoy finding out.

I'm glad we have ddumbass' classic wit, insightful outlook on life, and spectacular writing abilities to show us pitiful morons the grand view from his pedestal.

From Yu Huas Chronicle of a Blood Merchant [One of the last decades ten most influential books in China, this internationally acclaimed novel by one of the mainlands most important contemporary writers provides an unflinching portrait of life under Chairman Mao.]

They arrived at the edge of town as they spoke. As soon as they got into the city, Xu Sanguan took the lead, because he was from town and knew his way around. They told him they wanted to find a good place to drink some more water.

The two followed Xu Sanguans lead as he guided them down a twisting narrow lane, saying as he went, I cant hold it in anymore. Lets find somewhere to pee.

Genlong said, You cant pee. If you pee, all the water will go to waste. And youll have less blood to spare.

Ah Fang said to Xu Sanguan, We drank a lot more than you, and were still holding it in. He turned to Genlong. His bladders small.

Xu Sanguan, brows furrowed against the pain of his swollen bladder, began to move more and more slowly down the lane. Can it kill?

What do you mean can it kill?

Kill me! I mean, could my stomach burst?

Do the roots of your teeth ache? Ah Fang asked.

My teeth? Let me check. No, I guess they dont.

Then theres nothing to be afraid of. As long as your teeth dont ache, theres no risk of the bladder bursting, Ah Fang affirmed.

Just to state what I know on the subject, the woman in medical terms, didn't die directly of having too much water in her.

She died of hyponatremia or more specifically a non exercise induced form, euvolemic hyponatremia which is a condition of low blood sodium levels(usually caused by excessive water intake). This leads to brain edema, as the brain cannot swell to balance the sodium/water ratio.

Several marathoners (it should be noted, also not veterans or sufficiently trained) have died in the last year and this condition was well publicized and probably made it onto Oprah and all those Living Well type publications...

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the stations owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Stranges death.

We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred, he said.....

he continued, "Of course her three children will be receiving 2 for 1 passes at Chuck E. Cheese".
