First time ever. Let's see them try to keep them out of the debates next election.

Conservatives First, Greens Surge in Canada
January 11, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - The governing Conservative party closed 2006 as the top political organization in Canada, according to a poll by Environics Research Group. 34 per cent of respondents would vote for the Tories in the next election to the House of Commons.

The opposition Liberal party is second with 32 per cent, followed by the New Democratic Party (NDP) with 14 per cent, the Green party with 11 per cent, and the Bloc Qubcois with eight per cent. Support for the Tories increased by one point since November, while backing for the Greens went up by six points.

Canadians renewed the House of Commons in January 2006. The Conservative partyled by Stephen Harperreceived 36.3 per cent of the vote, and secured 124 seats in the 308-member lower house. Harper leads a minority administration after more than 12 years of government by the Liberal party. In December 2006, former environment minister Stphane Dion became the new leader of the Liberals.

This is the first national poll where the Greens appear in fourth place, ahead of the Bloc. In August 2006, the Green party chose its new leader in a national convention. Sierra Club of Canada head Elizabeth May defeated deputy leader David Chernushenko and four-time candidate Jim Fannon with 65.34 per cent of the vote.

Earlier this month, May discussed some of the partys priorities, saying, "Its very critical that we be participants in the leaders debate. () We can elect seats in the next election, and I expect we will. What we need are very credible candidates, people whose reputations are impeccable, and who run real campaigns based on issues."

I'd like to get involved in the Green Party when I go back home.
