Mayor Newsom in San Francisco proposed a similar program over a year ago. The problem is, it's always the same issue: people who work and money don' t want to subsidize those who don't . And, there is the whole immigration debate, which will really complicate this in California.
Universal health care is good in theory. No one wants people denied access to medicine. But, no one wants to pay for someone else's free ride either. When I was in California, I was one of the uninsured. It's hard to live with. But I don't think this bill will pass, and I think the Governor knows it. It's a political ploy to make him seem compassionate, when he knows he won't have to go through with it (and he'll be able to blame others). |
