Hi all!
I will be arriving in Korea in the middle of February and am trying to get everything in order to bring with me.
My question has to do with bringing a computer. I'm in the process of buying a laptop to bring with me, but am not very computer savy as to the requirements I will need. I want to get a computer that I will be able to download movies and burn DVDs as well as using Skype. What are the minimium requirements that I will need in a computer to be able to do these things efficiently?
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks! |

any computer will do what you want, even a PIII. Basically buy what you can afford.
My recommendation would instead be to wait until you arrive in Korea and buy a desktop. It'll be cheaper and better than what you could get out of a laptop. Most people don't need a laptop. The portability is a myth - honestly how often are you going to move it? once across the ocean, you can do that with a desktop easily.
A laptop larger than 12" is just a desktop replacement so you'd be better off getting a desktop. |

Well, you need a DVD burner and a network card. Other than that, as was mentioned previously, basically any computer being sold these days can handle movies and skype. |

I'm going to guess that you plan on parking your computer on a desktop for the majority of your time in Korea, yes? If that's the case, you could come to Korea, buy a desktop computer, use it for the year, chuck it out the window on your last day, go home, and buy another (brand new) desktop for what you'll likely pay for a laptop.
But, if you are still set on purchasing a laptop, pretty much any laptop made now will fit your needs. Did I mention I think you'd be better of coming here and purchasing a desktop? |

Yes, I saw it. Is no one else allowed to voice their opinion after you've given yours? |

Sorry, I guess I missed the memo. Eternity. Damnation. Noted. |

Semi-hijack...
How much is a gaming capable PC in Seoul likely to cost? New or 2nd hand is fine, but it needs to be comparable to top spec from 2 years or so ago.
Reason I ask is I am going to be moving out in teh next few months but can't decide if I should bring my home PC. It makes sense to bring it as it will be way outdated by the time I get home permanently, but the cost of UPS shipping is pretty high.
Another thing I am considering is stripping down my home machine and rebuilding it when I get there. If I remove all internal components and pack them up I could buy a new case in Seoul and rebuild it, saving a lot of cash in the process. |

that's what i did. the lady at the airport in the usa who looked at the xray of my bags was a bit confused by the 4 hard drives. i explained it to her, though, and she let it go. |

pcbangs are a great fix. my pc (top of the line a year ago, still pretty kickass) was out of order for several months (motherboard was a dud and i was short on money). |
