I'm looking quite actively for a decent contract in Seoul, and was just offered a contract from the much-mentioned YBM ECC. I just wanted to mention a few things that gall me about it, and seem, in some ways, somewhat patronizing.

In his email to me, "Mr. Shin" made sure to explain this contract is "based on 110 hours teaching per month instead of 120 or 130 hours teaching per month which is doing by other school." He doesn't mention that other school's contracted hours are "teaching hours," and are generally only 50 minutes long. As such, he claims, the contract, for "shorter work hours per week," is for only 2.0 million won/month.

Now, I'm somewhat new to the world of ESL contracts, but I HAVE read my share of contracts, and I know that I, with a Master's Degree and teaching experience, am worth more than 2.0 million won/month for 110 actual hours of teaching each week.

In addition, the 600,000 won deposit over three months is somewhat extortionate, he mentioned I'll probably be teaching kinder classes, there is no mention of the hours I would be working, and I'm expected to attend workshops and meetings without pay.

I have a small feeling he's not going to like my counteroffer. Sad

Overtime: Hourly Salary x 1.5
Working hours: They should be clearly defined in the labor contract
Airfare: Roundtrip airfare
Paid sick days: No less than 3
Emergency leave: 5-7 (You can use these in the event of a family death)
Korean National Healthcare Plan: It's mandatory & 2.24% per month
Korean Pension Fund: 4.5% per month
Income taxes: You wouldn't be higher than 1.6%
Annual Leave (paid vacation): 10 days
Korean National Holidays: You don't work on KNH, and these are paid.
Termination: 30 days
Severance Pay: Calculated as the sum of the last 3 months working salary. Load up on the overtime.
Housing: Single housing & make sure you get air-con!

The conditions in the contract are actually decent in regards to housing (central Kangnam, single studio apartment, furnished, all of which is very specific in the contract), severance, paydays, overtime, etc. The only real problems are the above-mentioned items, which are really, really crappy.
