Where can I get this (and mebbe peppermint essence)

I need it for my class as were making candy. I've been asking for Karoo sultang, which, according to Naver is the stuff I want. But they just bring me to granulated sugar and when I say no they look confused. There is more than one type of sugar! ARGH!

Help please Very Happy

You can get it at a lot of places now. E-mart and HomePlus have it as, I'm sure, do the other big joints. It's in the flour, sugar & spices isle in a red plastic pouch & is labeled Ŀ or something like that (Konglicized 'powdered sugar').

You can also find the C & H variety at http://www.yoricome.com (Dang, these guys should be paying me commission!!).

Edit: the brand I've found at HP & E-mart is called "Mix & Bake"

You could always put some granulated sugar in a blender or food processor and see what happens (that's how you get it in the powdered form). Never tried it, though.... Unfortunately, I have a feeling you will be SOL when it comes to peppermint. Koreans aren't into it.

Hey- you could try to make caramel corn or taffy for your class if u can't get the peppermint! Or peanut brittle! yum~

I've used powder sugar before, the result wasn't the same as if I had used icing sugar. Powder sugar is not as fine - it's more like refined granulated sugar.

I'm pretty sure it's the same thing... just a different name. 'Icing sugar' in the UK (& maybe NZ & Aus?) is called 'powdered' or 'confectioners sugar' in the US. I wasn't really sure, because I had never heard it called 'icing sugar' before I came here, but I looked it up online & that's what the websites I looked at said.

Perhaps the problem was that it needed to be sifted? Most icing (US=frosting) recipes I've seen instruct you to sift the powdered sugar because it tends to clump a bit....not that I do it here because I haven't bothered to buy a sifter. Laughing

Interesting, I didnt see any at Costco (tho I wasnt really looking for it) and at Carrefour they only had granulated. They just looked confused when i said that wasnt right. I got a look, two kinds of sugar? Crazy Waigook!

How annoying everything is so hard to do over here!

I'd definitely skip the peppermint (all puns aside) Koreans aren't generally fond of mint flavors ( haven't noticed the pine needle flavoured toothpaste here yet, huh?)

Funny, I was going to tell you the same thing that peri did. I have made powdered sugar by putting reg. sugar in the blender. It does work.

But if u want to make candy, you can do this:

In a small saucepan, heat (and stir constantly) brown sugar and butter until it sort of foams. Take it off the heat and stir in a bit of extract, any flavor, and a bit of salt. Add ay kind of nuts, and if you like raisens, add some. Mix well, and drop teaspoonfulls onto some foil. Let it cool for at least 20 minutes.

It really comes out good. The more butter you add, the softer the candy will become.

Krats, I am from the UK and we have ALWAYS called it icing sugar... this includes school and I went to an all girls borin.. I mean boarding school with a very old fashioned HE teacher... confectioners sugar is the other name used, too.

I tried using the one they sold in Emart - I actually looked at the sugar and it is very grain-y.

Like I said, JMO.

I've thought about trying that, but never got around to it. Thanks for the helpful tip.

Carrefour has an aisle now with baking goods in it...and funny enough it is right across from the sugar in little red packages...it will actual have 'sugar powder' written on it...on back of the package and on the tag on the shelf...

If you don't live near any of the western stores, you can always try your local bakery. I'm sure they'd be wiling to sell you some. I've bought powdered sugar at both my local Paris Baguette and the tiny grocery store nearby that happens to bake cakes.

They might think you're crazy for wanting to buy it, and the funny looks on their faces will be evidence of that. However, I'm sure they'd sell you some.
