My first trip to Thailand was awsome. Now for the next couple weeks I get to sit in an empty school.

Spent couple days in Bangkok but just like vegas you can only take that place 2 days at a time. To polluted but still was a fun city.

Kho Phangan was a blast did the touristy things but mainly I did nothing but be lazy get massages, go to the gym and watch free movies in restaurants. It was such a change to not be rushed anywhere. I think the added bonus was that there were no Koreans anywhere. I have never seen more Jews then on that island. It was cool to hang around, French, Sweeds, Norweigans, and other EU countries.

What blew me away was the fact that Thais have such a good grasp on english compared to here. Not to mention Thais knew lots of other languages.

Definetly gone go back there again.

Ko Pha Ngan is one of my favourite islands in Thailand.
Did you stay up in Thong Nai Pan?
I normally rent a bike and ride all over the island.
Lots of fun and a relaxing change from the rat race pace of big city life.

I'm planning to return to Thong Nai Pan in May when my contract expires for some nice relaxing time out. Have you been there recently? I was last there in 2003 and absolutely loved it, very chilled, relaxing and mellow place. I'm hoping it is still the same or at least similair these days, any info would be much appreciated! Cool

I stayed in Haad Rin. But I traveled through out the island. I wanted to be stay close to the gym, I am in a Muay Thai freak.

The vacation was great unfortunatley the flight back sucked. The service on Thai air back was horible. I think it was mainly because the passangers were Koreans.

I was in Ko Pha Ngan back in June last year. Not much seems to have changed - it's still a pretty good choice for some r&r. Maybe more construction happening up in Thong Nai Pan.

I also like Bottle Beach, which is also up on the North side of the island but more difficult to get to on land. I guess taking a boat taxi is the best bet to get to Bottle Beach. They were putting in some nice, new bungalows when I was there last summer. I'd like to go check it out now and probably stay there a few days.

I'm not a big fan of Had Rin. I do spend some time in Thong Sala, though. I normally try to get the ferry over from Samui to Thong Sala instead of Had Rin.

Wrench, I might know that gym you're talking about in Had Rin. I've worked out there before. It's run by 2 women who used to TEFL in Japan, I believe.

A photo of Thong Nai Pan that I took when I was there:

I'm currently coming through Bangkok for the fifth time on two SE Asia trips. The more you come through here the better you know the city and what to do, where to hang out, etc. My first three days on my first trip to Thailand were a bit of a waste, but now I'm happy to have a few days in BK anytime.

Probably one of the best times to go. It is the slow season so you can find great deals on hotels, the rainny season is near its end and the temp is not as hot as the height of summer.

actually, september is the peak month of the wet season, with an average of over 12 inches of rainfall over the course of the month. the temps aren't bad, but the weather might be.

at least you'll be able to find good deals..

February is the best time. In fact, pretty much Dec-Feb is really great. The end of March is when it gets to be really hot and unbearable. Don't go in September -- I was on Samui Sept - November and it poured almost every day.

Yeah, April to May in the southern Gulf islands is very hot.

But even in the rainy season, it's not all that bad. However, when it rains, it can rain really hard. You sometimes have to scramble for cover.

I've been caught out on the bike a few times during one of the heavy rains and had to park the bike and run inside a store for a while until the rain stopped.

November to May is hot over on the other side of the penninsular on the Andaman.
