Scientists expose HIV weak spot

Antibody (green) locks onto a key site on the virus
Scientists have shown what happens when an infection-fighting antibody attacks a gap in HIV's formidable defences.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases-led team say the work could aid HIV vaccine development.

They have published an atomic-level image in Nature showing the antibody, b12, attacking part of a protein on surface of the virus.

HIV avoids attack by constantly mutating, but this protein segment is a weak spot because it remains stable.

This is certainly one of the best leads to come along in recent years

Dr Gary Nabel,
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Dr Elias Zerhouni, director of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), said: "Creating an HIV vaccine is one of the great scientific challenges of our time.

At 25 years old, my entire life has been learning about condoms and HIV, I dream of the day I can engage in some good old fashion, 1970's gay condomless sex. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Even with the potential threat of HIV you can have condomless sex if you

1) trust the person and
2) are both monogamus (sp?) and
3) have been tested for everything known to man on more than one occassion and come out clean (at least 6 months apart) and
4) don't do any other "high risk" behavior

or the other easy way out is to both be virgins and #4 Smile

I mean hell me and my ex wouldn't worry about it or "forget" occassionally but we followed 1-4. The only thing we worried about was pregnancy but that was covered as well since he had a vasectomy (but those do naturally reverse on occasion....my best friend is living proof).

If you aren't going to do 1-4 then condoms all the way. But that's just my 2 cents worth, and the PSA/Soapbox is over Laughing

Good PSA, not stated enough especially for all those guys out there not using a rubber!

I trust my boyfriend and my lover (yes, I keep 2, just in case, lol) but monogomy is not my nor my 2 guys strongsuits.

There is a great doc called Gay Sex in the 70's

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455953/

and I would have love for us to be able to go back there, but that cannot happen until HIV is cured.

Until then, the rubber vigil continues!

One of my female friends in the states was like that: one steady boyfriend who occasionally has another girlfriend, her occasional boyfriend (or boyfriends) some who have other girlfriends or boyfriends, and occasionally a girlfriend or two that may or may not have other boyfriends/girlfriends. Everytime she told me about her plans and the relationships I kept having Sex Ed flash through my head "choose your partners wisely since you will effectively be sleeping with everyone they've had sex with and the people those people have had sex with and so on". I kept feeling like I should keep her supplied in condoms just so she'd stay healthy. To my knowledge she's never caught anything and no pregnancy scares so she's been real lucky. I am much happier and less worried when she gets into a stable monogamous or almost monogamous relationship. Everything else kinda scares me for her, I don't want to lose a friend Smile.
