I'm debating whether or not I should pay my KT Megapass bill.

The bill is rather high because it is installation month, so I will pay the installation fee. However I feel it is not fair to me to pay for the service itself.

Basically, my internet disconnects everytime I use considerable bandwidth (downloading any file, watching streaming videos, et cetera). I can usually download a file for a few minutes or so, then my internet disconnects, locks me out for about ten minutes or so, after which I can reconnect again. I know this is supposed to be an attempt at throttling (I don't mind the kind of throttling that limits my bandwidth--but I really think it is unfair for an ISP to disconnect someone if they are downloading anything at a rate of over 20kb/sec).

I called twice about this. The first time, they send a crew over to replace my modem. I wanted to test it while they were there to see if it worked or not, but they quickly bailed from my apartment before I could even speak.

When I called the second time, they just told me that there was nothing wrong with my connection and that it must be a local problem, one which I must remedy myself. It is not a local problem, they are attempting to throttle my connection by disconnecting me when I download information too quickly.

Should I pay, and cancel my service? Anyone else have this problem?

I've used KT for over 3 years now, never had a problem. I regularly download and upload stuff at high speeds. I never get disconnected. You might want to check what package you have.

But yes, you should pay the bill. Either that or cancel the service, and still pay the bill for what you used.

I had a lot of problems with off and on connections for several months. I would call once every week or two to have someone come out and fix it. I finally found a guy that spoke some decent Konglish and ended up just calling him directly. He eventually solved the problem (knock knock). Anyways, I asked for a discount and they gave me a free month.

I find it hard to believe that KT are deliberately throttleing your bandwidth as low as 20kb/s.

More likely it is a hardware problem.

Get a Korean friend to help you negotiate a discount, or get the problem fixed.

No... if it is a hardware problem, then it doesn't explain why I get disconnected significantly less late at night and significantly more in the morning/afternoon corresponding with what I would think are the peak/off-peak usage hours...

yeah i use KT. i fucking love my internet connection. nothing like downloading albums almost instantaneously; clicking on a movie torrent going for a piss and having it finished by the time you get back.... Having torrents on whilst playing online games with no interference... its like the future.

Compared to the internet in other countries like backward Australia, Koreans have it GOOD.

I had KT Megapass for one month and it was absolutely terrible. When I called and asked about Megapass service they said they speed for my area was very fast, like 50Mbps, but it was actually around a 3-600Kbps. It was slower than the free service my apartment was offering. I too felt cheated and told them so. Sorry, says KT... Had to pay in full. I told the lady that it's false advertising. You said I would get X speed and in reality got Y speed. Tough luck. I will not recommend KT to anyone, I told the lady. She had the cajones to ask, why? I use Hanaro, and the speed is really good.

I had a weird disconnect problem with KT and eventually figured out it was my zonealarm firewall. Basically KT issues you an IP for a temporary amount of time and then issues you another one. I think this prevents you from leaving your computer on and setting yourself up as your own ISP with a fixed IP. Anyway, when my connection polled for a new IP, zonealarm did something weird. Problem went away by turning off zonealarm.

I don't run a virus scanner and I hate ZoneAlarm so I don't know what is causing it. I called KT Megapass (props to them for having an English line) and they're coming over tomorrow to take a look at it. They have no idea what is causing it.

My connection is better lately as in I'm getting more than 20kb/sec now, but I was furious last night when I was trying to watch an episode of "House, MD" and the thing disconnected me after five minutes of streaming. I eventually just gave up on it.

Same thing happens when I download files over 10mb too. I was trying to download an update for one of my games and it kept disconnecting over, and over, and over again until I just gave up.

I checked my internet settings and to be honest I'm very unfamiliar with DSL connections. I've never had one before. Is there anything I should be looking for? Maybe it's a network settings problem, but I haven't touched it since the repairman installed the program. Maybe I'll change my Windows language into Korean tonight and see if that helps them pinpoint the problem.
