I am hoping to teach my first and second graders (middle school) Earth Day related stuff for next week. Any ideas? I found a few on the net, but they require more than 45 minutes. I need something short and sweet.

Throw some stats at them about pollution and globarl warming, then tell them to plant a tree. This can then expand into a step by step discussion on how to plant trees. It should be simple enough for them to explain in a group using words like "first, second, third, next, then, finally, etc."

Take them outside and get them to grow some green things. I think they are called plants. Those are green right?

Um, there's already a Korean holiday about planting trees. April 5th. It was a day off from work until this year ...

It's all about the fact that Korea was completely deforested due to the war and the years of Japanese colonialism. Go out in the country and tell me if you find a tree older than 60 years, and then tell me how me how to find it, because I have seen precious few in this country older than me, almost 50. We have to work that day this year because someone decided it must have worked because Korea has enough trees now - but the one distinctive thing I've noticed walking in the country here is that, unlike California and other places in N America, a lot of the trees look like they are around the same age, give or take a decade ...

Hey, now, THAT might be the proper hook to hang Earth Day on, come to think. Talk about how Korea decided to make a holiday where everyone in the country was asked to take a day off work and go out and find a hill and plant a tree on it. Link that to the many individual things humams everywhere can do try to stop global warming ...

Then, let's allsave the world. And tell your student that Koreans showed us how.

Cool
