So last night I was driviing around in my friends car. She has a small speed camera detection device that beeps whenever approaching a police camera, and again after it has been passed.

Thus...most koreans simply slow down before every camera and then step on it the moment they're out of range.

is this legal?

Korean "cheat" options are never ending. Rolling Eyes

Heard of radar detectors?

I never bothered to get one but my brother did. Are they still legal to own in NZ?

No. Neither are the the plastic covers they put on their license plates to defeat the photo-radar.

I've never heard of the Kops punishing anyone for the radar detectors, but there have been several stories about people being busted for using, selling, and importing the license covers.

Personally I think they are just up their for decoration. Everyone knows the speed limit, traffic signals, etc. are optional in Korea and most people don't even bother to obey them.

There is a sign saying a camera is there anyways. Why do you need a 'radar detector'? When you see the sign...slow down.

I've received two tickets because of speed cameras over the years. The first one was several years ago when the cameras were still uncommon. The thing about that time, I know the camera was wrong; I was with my wife, and we were in a single line of traffic that could only go one speed, because the other lane was under construction. I fought it at the police station (I demanded to see, and was shown, the camera's calibration certificate; although the manufacturer required that the camera be recalibrated every six months, it had never been in the two years it was in operation). The police had me see a judge who bluntly said, "Your fine is XXX won; pay it now or pay more in a week. If you want to take it to court, that's fine; I'll be one of the judges." The message was clear and we paid the fine (we considered it a donation to the city). The second ticket was possibly correct, but in the section I was ticketed in, I am always very careful of my speed.

As far as warnings go, the graphic GPS units in cars usually give them. Also, as was mentioned, there are signs telling you when a speed camera is coming up.
