I thought I'd give you all a laugh here.
I live on the 7th floor of an apartment building, about 60ft up. Last weekend I had an unexpected visit from the "Gwalishil" (maintenance office) gentlemen. "What brings you here?" I asked through the intercom "We've got a rope for you" they replied. Well I thought it was considerate of them to bring apparatus for suicide, "they must know how Korea drives me crazy, and are anticipating my needs." However, when I let them in a different, and no less alarming picture emerged. "This is an escape rope, in case the sprinklers fail" they said. The lead ajosshi, grinning maniacally, then proceeded to show me how I should open the window in the event of fire, tie a mariner knot around a not entirely secure looking ring/hook fixed onto the wall and absail seven storeys down.
I haven't figured out how to do any practice drills yet. I expect they will be rather dangerous.
Any suggestions? |

Actually, I've seen that. My old hagwon had a similar system, but the window that was supposed to be the escape route had been covered over in a later renovation, AND was blocked by a bookcase anyway.
I've heard that if there was a fire in a Korean apartment building that the toxic smoke from burning linoleum would do the most damage anyway, but that may be an urban legend.
( Toxic schmoxic, I live in Seoul fer chrissakes!) |

we live on the 7th floor and have neither. Oh and BTW they lock the front doors at from midnight to 6AM and getting somebody to open the door can be a challenge since guard is usually drunk or asleep.

almost as good as the building site next to my school which has two incidents of things falling off it (in one case the entire scaffolding tower of the ten story building came down on top of some people just a few meters from the kids making their way home from school)
Don't know if liabilty laws are necessarily the way to go, I'm a left and prefer no liabilty and the government pays for every accident but fines people who are responsible for accidents and hikes up their insurance, which we have back in New Zealand.

I live 6 or 7 floors up depending on which way I would have to jump. I womens side to my dorm has a rope, which would be the nearest. Foreigners need a rope, nope. |
