I know this may not directly belong on the Korean board, but it is interesting information.

My boyfriend's friend is teaching in Southern Thailand. He is a replacement teacher at a local school, teaching 1,000 kids a week . He said people kill teachers as a hobby down there. Muslim insurgents seeking a seperate state have been targeting teachers to make their point. Over 67 teachers have been killed this year alone and 113 schools burned down. They buried an English teacher a few days ago that was beat into a coma a few months ago. Two teachers were killed in drive-by-shootings last week and 2 killed a few days ago from a bomb. There's been about 2,500 people killed in the bombings and shootings in the two years, and a Canadian English teacher killed before Xmas. The government has asked all teachers to carry guns to school.

Now, this is all third-party information, but even so, it is crazy! I can't believe his boss would send him there.

Since North Korea is communist, any forms of religion are banned, I understand. Could this have trickled down to South Korea? I am just wondering why this whole terrorist insurgence hasn't affected certain parts of Asia, such as South Korea. If this has happened in the past, I am not aware of it.

I'm not sure what I'd do - 28,000 baht per month is a lot of money to just walk away from!

An internet search "teachers killed in Thailand" yields numerous articles confirming OP, including an article about teachers carrying guns.
It is not limited to foreign teachers.

A friend of a friend spends entirely too much time on the internet. He said people on there make stuff up for sh-ts and giggles. Eleventy kabillion netizens this year alone have tossed out hard to believe stats without giving a credible a source. I ask all of you to wear hip waders.

I don't know about foreign EFL teachers in Thailand, or how many have been killed - other than 1 Canadian who died in a bombing - but I did see this article about teachers being allowed to carry guns. The article is from July, 2005.

Quote:

Thai teachers to be allowed guns

Many teachers in the south want to be armed against militant attacks
School teachers in Thailand's troubled southern provinces will be allowed to carry guns, the government has said.

The move is one of a series of measures designed to keep education staff from leaving the violence-hit south.

Many of the region's teachers are thought to have either stopped working or demanded a transfer from the area.

More than 700 people, including at least 24 teachers, have been killed since January 2004 in unrest which the government blames on Islamic militants.

Teachers are often targeted as they are seen as symbols of Thailand's Buddhist authorities.

'Fearful and demoralised'

"We have granted special rights for teachers to carry guns," deputy education minister Rung Kaewdaeng told reporters on Tuesday, adding that 2,000 teachers had already requested arms.

Thailand's restive south

"They need guns. This is now a necessity as many people have survived attacks because they shot back at the attackers," Mr Rung is quoted as saying by the French news agency AFP.

They will be provided with cheap or second-hand firearms and flak jackets, he added.

In the most violent areas of southern Thailand, teachers are already escorted to school by security personnel.

Education Minister Adisai Bodharamik admitted that teachers there were "fearful and demoralised".

"If teachers want to move out from the region, we cannot stop them," Mr Adisai told reporters.

He said he had already directed education authorities to approve transfers for more than 2,700 teachers out of the area, to be replaced by volunteers.

Here is another article I read:

Neither article mentions foreign teachers.

I already said there are numerous news articles if you do a search.

There are too many articles to waste time linking all of them.

Previous poster provided some.

It is not limited to foreign teachers.

But it is the OPs responsiblity to post news articles when making those kinds of claims.

If your point is that "foreign" does not belong in thread title, agreed it should be removed.
Apparently OP is not deliberately trying to mislead, but "foreign" does not belong.

I know they've been killing a lot of Thai teachers down there. not sure iif they include foreigners.

Over 1,700 people have reportedly been killed and many more injured, including a number of foreigners, since the level of violence began to increase in Thailands southern provinces in January 2004.
