I'm interested in buying an engagement ring for my girlfriend, hopefully soon-to-be fiance, and I'm at a loss where to go about doing this. Obviously, I want to get good value and deal with a business that is both reputable and legitimate.
Does anyone know of any jewlers in the Seoul-area that I could deal with in English? Or would it be best to bring along a Korean friend to help me with the translation?

What makes you think that just because the jeweler speakes English, he is some how more reputable and legit? If he speaks English, do you think you've got a better shot at seeing through his dastardly ways?
Ka Ka Juseyo means "lower the price please." It's almost 100% that he'll expect you to barter a bit.
All jewelers know what Karat means. Ship Sa K (14K), Ship Pal K (18K), and Ee Ship Sa K (24K) are all common in Korea.
Make sure you get the ring sizes accurate. Korean sizes are different from overseas. Swipe one of your GF's rings to get the measurement right.
In Seoul, there's a very large area at Chong-no 3 Ga of jewelry stores. |

Just so you are aware... there is a 100% import tariff on the diamonds AND a 10% VAT/sales tax so your ring will cost 2 times more here that it would in a freeport like Hong Kong.
Do yourself a favor. Go to Hong Kong and buy it. The money you save will more than pay for the airplane and mini-vacation.
If you buy from a licensed jewelry shop you are guaranteed that what you think you are buying is what you get (guaranteed by the government of Hong Kong). Just make sure you get the official receipt.
For example, a .33ct, VVS1, brilliant, round, white diamond in a white gold setting and 18k yellow gold band cost me about USD$500.
It will cost you that much just to get a cubic zirconia here. A comparable diamond ring here will cost you more than a million won (probably close to 1.2).
Shop and compare and see ... then plan your mini vacation.

Didn�t really intend to jump in here, but was shocked by the results when hubby went in to get my engagement ring replated.
I�ve been having issues with contact dermatitis over the last year and have been waiting to get it done, as the first English speaking jeweller I spoke to quoted something like 150 bucks to have it done with a non-nickel containing alloy (it�s white gold.)
Near Haebangchon, on the opposite side of the footbridge from PSA, is a place called �jewelry clinic� or something like that. The guy must have worked with American soldiers or something in the past, because he has that natural relaxed (but far from perfect) English that you can�t learn in a classroom. Hubby and I spoke with him last week, and he was charming� though he spent too long inquiring if we knew any of the same people in the neighbourhood before he realized that we don�t attend the local English-speaking church there�
Anyway, hubby pops in to drop off the ring, and get this: 20 bucks.
I can tell you how it turned out in a week or so, but I'm surprised and pleased so far. |
