A teacher I know says she is going to a public elementary school and that every day students have off she has off. No camps. No professional development. And she says it is explictly promised in the contract that she gets like 17+ weeks total when you add in all holidays and breaks.

Is this even possible at a PUBLIc (not private) Elementary school? She has no B.Ed and little experience. No MA either. Degree is not in English.

Pay is about 1.9 with normal 9-5 kind of hours, 22 classes or whatever. But all the possible holidays are actually explicit.

She is blonde, 25, slim wih a good figure and pretty attractive - yes. But she says this contract is standard at her school for everyone in their first year.

I want that kind of vacation without getting my MA and doing Uni lol.

If you're attractive here in K-land, everything is negotiable and possible.

yeah but I met her friend that already works at the school and got her the job. He is a guy and not that attractive. Same contract.

I thought all public school contracts were centralized - some schools could be more lenient , but contractually they all had to say the same thing on vacations.

Ah now I understand (after some searching). Contracts for Public schools are not yet entirely centralized through the ministry. Rather they have these GEPIK and EPIK type programs that schools can subscribe to. If they do, then the contracts themselves are standardized.

But for now, some Public Schools opt out of these centralized programs and recruit their own teachers. How long this can last remains unknown. But apparently if they do it themselves they can offer whatever the hell they want.

I'm curious as to what will happen when public school contracts become standardized. I have a feeling that they will get worse and worse, little by little as time goes on. I could be worng though.

With that being said, I wonder how it will affect the hogwan market? There will always be a place for hogwans, and if the public schoosl go into a standardized contract (and inevitably decrease benefits), I would think that the hogwan market would be a pretty interesting thing.

I have seen public schools only offering 10 days vacation, 1.9 million a month. About two years ago, I was seeing public school contracts (not engulfed in the GEPIK/EPIK scheme as of yet) offering 2.2 with four weeks of vacation.......2 in the summer and 2 in the winter (even if you dont' resign).

I have heard this as well. Lets say you put in two or three years at a public school (I know a few who have been doing it), and you decide to move on to greener pastures at another school. I have heard that you would have to start out as if you were a new teacher, same pay level as a newbie.............has that happened to anyone?

Honestly, I can't complain too much about my school (everything else yes, but not the school). But, if I could find a kick ass hogwan, offering 2.2/2.3 with a month of vacation, I would definately take it. Hell, I would take it even if it offered 2.1........vacation is a good thing.

cheers.

Our university hires for the public schools in our city.
Public school teachers work the same amount of weeks as we do at the uni, plus they get a bunch of other days off too. I think it's fair cause they have to deal with little annoyingkids. I on the other hand have to deal with bigger annoying kids. I want more vacation Smile

I'd certainly take a pay cut for decent vacation time.
