|
|
My employer informed me 2 days ago that the the terms of the foreign teachers' contracts are changing as of March 1. The school is extending the hours, forcing us to work longer days. We are being offered compensation for the hours, but we have no choice but to accept the extra work or quit.
I would appreciate any advice as far as what my rights may be (including website links to research this on my own!). Something I'm especially concerned about is that my salary will be changing, yet he claims we won't be getting a new contract. Isn't my visa (E-2) directly connected with my salary. My current understanding is that I can't make more than my contract states... So, if any raise in salary comes about, I'd need an ammended visa...
Thanks, in advance! |

Basically, your boss is right. You can agree to the new deal, or quit.
No, your visa is not really connected to your salary. It's really only concerned with your first and last day of working.
Advice: Is the new deal tolerable, with the increased pay and increased working hours? If yes, smile and deal with it. If no, then tell your boss you don't like it and to write you a letter of release.
Good luck. |

Ya-Ta, are you sure? What is legal about changing a year-long contract in the middle of the term? Legally, the first contract the OP signed would be the one Immigration, etc, would consider valid.
The OP does not have to sign a new contract that would not be beneficial to him/her.
OP, I think you should call the Labor Board and tell them the situation and if it is legal for your boss to force you to either sign or quit. |

Agreed, call the Labor Board. They have intervened on behalf of teachers whose bosses tried to force them into changing/amending their contracts in the middle of the year. |
