Just wondering what the best gift you ever received in Korea. Last semester I had a student who worked at the Hyatt in Seoul. Every week or so she would bring me different things such as wine, cheese and baked goods. Unfortunately, she graduated this year. So I guess it's back to kimbap and Hite.

Why are you here?

And the best gift a student has ever given me was 40 consecutive minutes of utter silence.

I truly hope you weren't teaching a speaking class. Very Happy

Maybe not most expensive present, but certainly favorite: a really tasteful hipster tie. that and a surprise party.

I have gotten a few great presents. Well, great to me.

1) a badly painted macaroni necklace. it was given to me with pride and a huge smile.

2) a bunch of dachki (how ever it is spelled). I said "WOW! those are great", and the next day a kid brought me in some.

3) A pair of underware!! We were talking about clothes and one kid said "are you wearing panties?" and I said "no, I do not have any". A few days later a kid brings me in a pair of HIS underware, and for the life of me I could not figure out why. I asked the mom, and she said her son came home crying and said I could not afford them! (hey, this was a kindy student...)

Funny you should ask. Got some lovely Farreiro Rocher yesterday from 신주연. They complimented my delicious glass of Appleton Estate Vintage rum and a particularly gorgeous Macanudo perfectly

1. One student whose husband was a doctor would give me $300 every year for christmas.

2. My TOEIC class pitched in to give me a digital camera as a "thank you" gift.

3. My business English class at LG gave me a sterling silver bottle cork opener at the end of the session...

Hmm.. the most selfless gift I got was from a student at field day event the hagwon was putting on. At the end, there was a raffle and the kid won two coupons for a bookstore, or whatever those mysterious 5,000 won things are. He was so happy about it. Then he came over to me and gave me half.

The most aesthetic gift I got was a portrait of me done by a kindergarten student. It shows me with an exaggeratedly oval face, enormous round eyes, strange little ringlet ears and a triangular smile. Everyone said it looked just like me, as this artist was known for noticing all the important details (made many a girl cry with his art).

The funniest thing I got was Pantie as a present.

I'll say one thing about Asian students and by extension Asian American students. They were and are always the only ones who give gifts and, at least in my case, seldom to try to bribe their way into my gradebook.

The best gift from a Korean student: a thermos of hot, real cream-mixed decaf coffee on a cold morning.

The best gift ever:

A Chinese graduate student gave me a traditional Chinese landscape painting on a scroll done by her grandfather, who is a state sponsored master of the craft. It proudly hangs on my living room wall now.

Well, another gift years ago from another Chinese grad student after grades were submitted (she had a solid A anyway) I can't divulge on this forum. Wink

I had a student named Tim. We used to enjoy laughing in class. I did teach him serious things, but I made there were moments of laughter and he also made sure there was the same for me. For me, that was one of his gifts to me. He also when the hagwon was closing down gave me part of a sea shell something like a mother of pearl. It was simple, innocent, and nice. It wasn't from his town, it was something he obviously gathered on a trip. It meant something to me.

In Korea: some really delicious bread.

Ever: A pressed leaf from the sweetest elderly man. I taught him in Chicago and he gave me the leaf before he left to return to China. I still have it.
