hey now

i am a US American fresh off the boat and new to Seoul this week. I'm looking to explore outside my local area by hopping aboard the subway (line 4) to see whats doing in this new city of ours.

does anyone have any thoughts on what might be fun and managable to get at? anything from markets to museums could be pretty interesting to me, im just looking to soak in the local flavor a bit.

any suggestions certainly appreciated. for better or worse I lost my lonely planet guidebook while hauling it around and using it as a phrasebook to order food/say thank you in korean etc. so pointers will certainly come in handy.

Find the Seongbuk-gu thread that was current last month. I think it was misspelled as "Sungbuk-gu."

If you go to Suyu Station, you can take bus 1165 to Hwagyesa temple. Or from Sungshin women's uni, you can take bus 151 or 152 (152 will take you to the bus depot, a block away from the Hwagyesa road. There are signs).

If you go to Suyu station or get to the Hwagyesa area, write "4-19" on a piece of paper and show a taxi driver. He will take you to the nearby 4-19 memorial park. If you say "Doseonsa" the driver will take you to Doseonsa temple. It's one of the best temples. From the Doseonsa entrance, you can also hike up the Baegundae hike, it's the tallest peak on Bukhansan and is only 3.5-4 hours round trip. A restaurant with drinks and beer is near the top of the hike, too. Getting down can be harder if you want a taxi, but if you stand in line at the parking lot next to the Buddha statue, the "Buddha bus" will shuttle you down to the main road for free (donations are appreciated) and you can get a city bus or taxi from there.

If you head south to Hyehwa from Seongbuk-gu, there are tons of restaurants and bars, Korea's oldest university (Sungkyunkwan uni) and one of the nicest palaces in Seoul.

In April, I'm going to organize a Seongbuk-gu area expats' gathering one night in Hyehwa (though Hyehwa is in Jongno-gu). Keep an eye out for the info.

Enjoy your Diane Fossey/Jane Goodall experience and then head to Itaewon for Nigerian food.

i am definitely catching a healthy amount of stares from all the wrong sorts of people

earlier today i was at the 'family mart' and this guy came up to me and awkwardly shook my hand saying the words 'american' and 'friend' repeatedly. two minutes later as i was checking out he gave me the exact same routine.

Actually, that's one of the good Koreans who appreciate the fact that they aren't in communist N. Korea control and are thankful of the USA for that.

I head to Itaewon about once a month for specialty food or to see other non-Koreans. But resorting to Itaewon instead of the dozens of other fun areas in Seoul will leave your Korean experience very short sighted.
