so after hunting down some good cheap mexican food in gangnam (dos tacos - a big thank you to everyone who posted directions to get there) i about wet myself laughing in gangnam station on the way home.
mind you, this is like my fourth day in seoul, so all of this is new to me.
well, i was following this middle aged korean dude through the crowded station, until we eventually found ourselves in a gridlock. all of a sudden i saw him lower his body a bit, and ram himself HARD into the back of an unsuspecting ajumma. her arms flailed out to balance herself as she stumbled probably 6-8 feet away, and the ajoshi walked through like it was perfectly normal. the ajumma never even looked back to recognize what happened. i couldn't help myself, i was in hysterics as i continued following the korean bulldozer in front of me. |

Welcome to Seoul, glad you like it as much as I do! I always had to suppress the need to push and shove back home... not anymore! |

I've had the urge to "do as the Romans" here with the shoving, pushing, cutting off, and a whole host of other what we would consider ill social manners exhibited here in Korea (but which are not seen as such apparently by the locals; and it is their turf, so . .). However, I resist the urge because I fear that if I start doing it here, I may not be able to turn the behavior off when I am back home and get myself beaten to a pulp !
I am serious about this. I really think like this. And I would recommend my "compatriots" ask themselves "Will I be able to put these bad habits on the shelf when I get home?"
I take this attitude in my driving as well, though I am not a fool about it: being courteous in Korean traffic can get you in an accident. It's so unexpected that it causes miscalculations among other drivers, who are assuming you are going to be as aggressive as they are and react or preempt accordingly.
That said, once, recently in fact, I did accidently bowl a young lady over. She made a dead stop right in the middle of the sidewalk and I was just not watching closely enough. I apologized, but she didn't even acknowledge it, so I moved on and forgot about it, though with a little bit of a smirk on my face. Surprising to myself, I kinda felt . . good? uh, compensated? Shame, shame! |

Sorry you didn't pick up on my Jimmy Hoffa sarcasm. Also, I did consider just a six month contract for awhile, but decided that a full year (and maybe more) would suit me better. I'd been in Thailand the last three months, which would explain my posts there. It's really not that big of a mystery. Why do you care anyway?
