| I've been here almost 4 months and have been renting a desktop pc. My school arranged it and told me that it costs 50,000. They take this automatically out of my pay and include it as a deduction on my 'certificate of salary'. I am intending to purchase my own computer soon but just wondering if I've been royally screwed... The screen is the old chunky type and is quite dark despite being set to 100% brightness, no cd/dvd burner, korean xp, pentium 3 1.ghz, 256mb ram |

You are getting royally screwed.
You can buy a computer for a great price here, a great price no matter what you need.
If you only need to use the Internet, there was even someone on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum offering to give their old, worn-but-usable laptop away.
In fact, I've got an Apple iMac that's about 6 or 7 years old that works great for basic stuff that you buy for, I don't know, say around $100 or so. That's 2 months of what you're paying, but when you buy something, you buy it once and then keep it (forever). |

I have no idea about that. In fact, I've never heard of anyone renting a computer over here.
I suggest that you buy yourself a computer that does what you want (Internet, games, whatever). You might have to pay for monthly Internet service yourself though. That can run around 30,000 won/month. Do a search here; there was a thread recently about ISP cost.
When I first came here, I bought a used computer (the one I mentioned above) for 300,000 won to use at home. And, since I had an office at work, I subsequently bought another one for 100,000 or 200,000 won. I bought both of them from advertisers on, I think, here and the Korea Herald or Times classified board. All I wanted, though, was a machine for Internet and word processing. |

| You can get a mobile broadband internet connection for 30k month. I don't see why a sh'tty old desktop will cost you 50k month. |
