i want one now, but i'm still in the process of lining up my visa. i've heard that after i make my visa run, i'll likely have to wait a month or so before receiving my ARC card - which is apparently what i need to purchase a phone. but is there any way around this? being without a phone is an incredible annoyance and a real pain the ass, especially when you're new to seoul and trying to network a bit.

You can buy a pre-paid phone with just your passport.

Just go to the used phone shops in Itaewon, pay around 80,000, and walk out with a working cellphone.

Use pre-paid cards. But you may have to change your number if you want to get a real contract later.

Last saturday the LG shop had a new phone on sale for 100,000 won for a new customer that didn't already have a phone. So far I've just used email and the phone at work but it did cause a problem when I tried to meet someone in Seoul. There is a cell phone rental service that I read about:
