I noticed many people responded to "Worst Textbook" but nobody responded to my post about finding a great book for first year beginner students.

Does anybody know of excellent conversational books for beginners?

It really depends on the level of your students. I have always maintained that almost any of the mainstream books can be used as conversational books if one actually takes the time in setting up a lesson.

Personally, I prefer smart English for my advanced students. For my younger advanced kids, oh man...i forgot the name (on vacation now).....arghhh..I'll get back to you later.

Backpack and English Time are my favorites. Both have workbooks that supplement the main textbook.

Thanks for the reinforcement for English Time. That is the book that my Head Teacher wants.

However, often do use that book in the class and how long does it take to finish one book?

Thanks

About 40 minutes for two days or 80 minutes a week. Takes me two sessions to finish. Actually English Time is alright, but I don't give it a high rating. The conversation as no connection to the target language being taught which is annoying and even the target language is odd at times:

"What were you doing when the baboon walked by?"
"We were putting on makeup when the baboon walked by."

allllrightythen!

After teaching Kids in a hagwon for a year I can say:

Backpack 1 - 3. Two thumbs down
New Parade 1 - 3 Two thumbs down

These are coloring books that are almost pointless. Kids will just color and talk in Korean all period.

Backpack 4 - 6. Mildly decent, for the right class. Not great, but tolerable.

English Time 1 - 6. Two thumbs up. Way up. There is real pedagagy in this series. The authors comprehend the issues of decoding in language acquisition and the work is engaging. Kids like it, too.

Generally, I believe that texts published by Oxford are superior to those published by Longman.

What else do you think Korean girls are going to want to talk about when they see a foreigner?

I had to teach the sentence, "I jump into bed with my chimp" the other day. Stupidstupidstupid. anyway, English Time is good, but I think Let's Go is better; the structure is better, the target language is better, the conversations are more realistic.

I really thing the Let's Go series is good starting from book 1. Once you get beyond book 2 or 3 you can switch to a different one. I just think the songs are great and I have had great results with the songs plus playing games with the flashcards.
That being said it definitely needs to be supplemented with some phonics books or worksheets to get them reading. But another great part is, the workbook corresponds to the stuff you taught in the student book, so it makes assigning homework easy.
