I'm fast losing track of the many emails I send out and thought it was time I learnt how to design my own blog. I don't really know how to so was looking for good sites that are user friendly and look good.
Can anyone give me some good suggestions? |

TypePad and Blogger would be the best for someone who is new to blogging. They are both easily configured and just require that you create an account. TypePad is ad free and more powerful, but it is also a paid service. For hosted blogs, you could also use Myspace, Xanga, or Cyworld (American or Korean), but lets face it, you have probably moved on from high school and have no need for that kind of "community" atmosphere.
If you actually want to HOST your own blog, there are several "blogware" packages that you can get. WordPress is the favourite among many because it is free and relatively easy to use. It does have some restrictions though, like not being able to use some html code within a post, including object embedding (youtube videos, for example).
Text Pattern is another option, though I don't really like it that much. I think it is a little weak in functionality.
Moveable Type is a fairly solid platform, but you have to pay for it and it can be VERY difficult for a newbie to blogging to set it up on their server hosting.
My favourite blogware is Expression Engine. You can use the full version or the free one, that is alternately called Expression Engine Core. EE is as powerful as MT, far far FAR easier to setup, has fewer server core requirements, and is just AWESOME all around. If you are going to host your own blog, EE is definitely the way to go, IMHO. There are other users on this forum who I'm sure would endorse EE as much, or more, than I do. |

| Actually I would have to say that EE is even more powerful and flexible than MT. |

Blogger is great. Very easy to set up and start, with some lovely templates.
Go to blogger.com and try it out.
Also, if you decide to host your own blog, you can just publish your blogger blog to your new site and be done with it. |

This is true. You could start blogging with Blogger while you figure out the direction you want to take with it and whether you are into blogging or not. Then if you decide you really like it, you could export your archives and then transfer them over to most any other platform of blogware afterwards. Most blogware has an import function that includes compatibility with Blogger exports. |
