I'm out looking for a job once again.
Today, I'm going through all the job sites, and came up with a few new ones for me.
Some schools are now requesting a Criminal Record Check. I don't have any criminal past, and in many ways it's a good thing that schools are now checking on teacher's backgrounds, but from an applicants view on top of transcripts and possible medical forms, adding a CRC makes it too much to handle.
I enquired about the involvement of getting a CRC at the local police station, and they say it involves providing proof of abode at all my addresses over the last 5 years with proof of registration at overseas immigration offices... Phew... As I've lived at over 20 different addresses during that 5 year period with all sorts like yeogwans, goshiwons and pc bangs part of my accommodation history, how am I ever going to provide proof of abode for all those? Quite simply, I can't apply for any such job being in the hurry that I am.
I also noticed a statement on Workn'Play which contained a description of Seoul Ministry of Education Public School jobs. I didn't like this clause:
QUOTE:
If NSET should desire to resign and thereby terminate the contract, he/she must give SMOE a one-month prior written notice of resignation and will not be able to have or seek employment in other institutes. (Letter of release will not be provided.) |

If true, it would definitely make me give it a triple think-about!
Another issue I would see in this, is the legality of it. Why would someone give notice, if there is nothing to gain from it? It would seem they are setting themselves up for those who can't stick with the program, to disappear before the six months (suppose they could blacklist you though). Leaving after six months, guess it's no big deal?
Has the flavor of a penalty clause to me; but hey, I'm American and tend to think differently anyway! |

For some reason, the Koreans believe they will attract better qualified candidates by putting more onerous clauses into their contracts.
Just say no.
If you are properly qualified and experienced, you can easily work elsewhere in Asia, and while you will make slightly less money, the quality of life will be so much higher that it will more than make up for the decrease in salary. |
