I have just turned down an EPIK contract and am now eyeing up Hagwons. I wish to know if I should find a job from here (NZ), or fly over and find a job myself in Pusan. I have a BA and no ESL exp, but do have an Associate diploma in Speech and university tutor/teaching assistance exp. I have about $4000 available at the moment. Will I be able to find a wage that is that much better (and make back the flight cost)? |

To answer your question In a nutshell.... NOT likely.
You can get a job in a hakwon... it may appear to pay a little better but you will work more classes for it. Your quals are only good for entry level wages.
The EPIK contract you turned down is (for the same number of classes) better than any entry level hakwon in the country.
Your base salary would be low (1.8 mil) but it is for only 22 classes. If you add in the extra afternoon classes you end up working 28 classes per week for slightly more than 2.2 mil + benefits.
Get your TESOL cert in your downtime and bump up your wage by 100k. Stay an extra year and get bumped up a level for another 200k.
2nd year becomes really productive with a base of 2.1 or 2.2 + that extra 500k per month for the afternoons. Brings you up to 2.7 + housing and benefits.
Patience there laddy....look at the big picture and not just the base salary.
Remember = The grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side of the fence. |
