Navy crew: We were blindfolded, isolated 21 minutes ago

ROYAL MARINE BASE CHIVENOR, England - A British navy crew made a conscious decision not to fight back against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard who took them captive, they said Friday, adding that the 15 were blindfolded and kept in isolation for much of their detention.

One of the crew members, Royal Marine Captain Chris Air, said the only woman in the group was kept apart from her fellow service members and was told her colleagues had gone home.

Leading Seaman Faye Turney whose television appearances and letters were widely aired believed she was alone, Royal Marine Captain Chris Air said. "She was under the impression for about four days that she was the only one there," Air said. "She coped admirably and has maintained a lot of dignity."

When captured, Air said, the 15 British sailors and marines faced an aggressive Iranian crew. "They rammed our boats, and trained their heavy machine guns, RPGs, and weapons on us. Another six boats were closing in on us. We realized our efforts to reason with these people were not making any headway, nor were we able to calm some of the individuals," Air said. "We realized that had we resisted there would have been a major fight, one we could not have won and with consequences major strategic impacts. We made a conscious decision not to engage the Iranians and do as they asked."
