I haven't been able to find any advice through google on this one,
is there any one out there who can shed some light on the problem?
I have a 2 1/2 year old hp pavilion zv5000, and I used to have the power button set-up to hibernate the system when quickly pressed.
This was to save on start-up time and save power.
Recently I was watching online videos, and I lost the internet connection (wireless area, very patchy!) which caused everything to stall and not respond. I have had a few of these in recent months.
When I went to power back up, after shutting down with a long press of the power button, it seemed like the button was not responding!
After a few attempts, my heart started beating again, when it started working again.
There is now occasionally a few second delay before the button actually switches the power on, and the hibernate function doesn't work when pressed anymore.
Sorry to be so long, but can any one help |

I just gave away my three year old HP laptop piece of junk, and it was doing the same thing.
Just to power up, I usually had to depress the button for up to a minute. I think it was due to a couple of mitigating factors. The first was that the button connections were probably getting a little old. I am also pretty sure that the pattery was completely discharged and unable to hold a charge anymore (this happens if you run your laptop on AC power all of the time with the battery still within the unit - over time, it will kill your battery). Finally, I think my BIOS battery was dying because I had a few issues with the system time, date, etc. changing a couple of times.
Perhaps your laptop is having the same issues that mine did. |

| BTW, it seems like your random shut down could have been caused by too much heat, not enough energy being provided to the system by the PSU, or a possible electrical surge. |
