I have the option of a 1 hr layover vs. an 8 hr layover in HKG when flying from Singapore to SFO. The 1 hr layover would be my choice but a) I love HKG b) I know downtown is a short train ride away from the airport (30 minutes? if i recall).
Therefore, I'm wondering if I should take the 8 hr layover. Obviously I wouldn't have nearly that much time due to the ride to and from the airport, plus immigration/etc.. but still, this is HKG. Who knows when I'll be passing through again. What do you think?

| 1 hour is really cutting it for making the transfer anyway. I've had a 90 minute transfer and the plane was on final call by the time I reached the gate. Though that was at Narita and I had to travel between terminals. |

| yeah. it is actually 70 minutes, and it is the same airline (united) so I can't imagine having to change terminals. |

HongKong is a huge terminal and you may have to run 70 gates or catch the subsay between the two gates/planes.
Most agents won't let you do a 60 minute change between planes because if there is any delay (including air traffic getting stacked) you will miss the connection. |

well i checked the gates, and they were two apart both yesterday and today. Yes, I know, it could change any time. BUT the ticket is via united.com, so i figure they wouldn't offer that if it was that much of a stretch.
soooo.. 8 hours, that's the question. |

8 hours... You have enough time to get downtown, buy a souvenir and a HK T-shirt and then get back to the airport to check back in.
1 hour to get through customs, 1 hour to get downtown, 2 hours for shopping, 1 hour to get back, 1 hour buffer and 2 hours left to check in and wait for your flight. 8 hours - done like dinner. |
