So you have a new public school job and you think that allows you to 4 weeks winter vacation in Thailand, right? Wrong. Every public school that I know only allows foreign teachers to leave the country for 7 working days during winter vacation. That gives you a grand total of 9 days counting the weekend.
With the schools closed for 5 - 8 weeks and no classes to teach, why don't they allow teachers to travel out of the country longer than 9 days?
Anyone have the answer on this? |

What happened to Public school teachers getting like 3 months of holidays? I thought that was the whole point?
W T F are all the starting jobs for people without actual training in education becoming similar to 9-5 jobs back home? |

If you have a holiday, get the relevant re-entry permit and JUST GO.
As long as you're not late coming backor classes,no one cares(or would know in the first place)
There's NO "overseas travel allowance".Doesn't exist.I have a 2 week holiday,I could go overseas for 16 days.Who's going to tell me otherwise?
Show some initiative

Because they only want one-termers?
I just got back from 2 weeks in SE Asia. That brings my holidays so far this contract to just over 5. I'm expecting I'll get a few weeks more. I'm staying at my job. Were it 7 days winter and summer I think I'd seriously be looking at job ads for when this contract is up.
It's just amazing how Koreans like to shoot themselves in the foot over something so trivial, isn't it? |

Yes, it is ridiculous. Korean teachers winter break -35 days, Native Eng teachers 7 days.
Now before the apologists reply, I realize that the Korean teachers generally 'work' harder than we do, with more responsiblity. But, K teachers get paid much more than we do, also.
The problem is is that there is nothing for us to do during the break, so why alienate the native english teachers by creating make-work projects or have them sitting on their a** for 30 days.
I can not stand basic unfairness combined with stupidity thus I would never sign again with the public school programs.
I do understand people who will swallow their pride and work in public schools because it is still better than most hagwons.
As Mack has said the best option, if you can, is freelancing. |

At my school I seem to be used to help ease the load of winter break lessons the KTs have to teach. If I teach 4 lesson a day, like I'm doing this week, that's one or two less KTs who have to come in. It seems I get a bit less time off than the tenured teachers but a bit more than the contract teachers. All in all it works out quite well. Hopefully my school district continues to hold off with this 'we have to keep the waegook as occupied as possible' crap. |

Yu Bum:
Why are KT teaching now? My middle school has no classes (except for my "camp") and only 2 "rotating duty day" teachers are at at my school on any given day during January.
All KT's at my school are off for 30+ days during Jan-Feb period. Each KT has 2 duty days during that period. |

At my high school the teachers who teach vocational subjects have a few duty days and most of the ones who teach academic subjects come in for part of winter break to teach extra classes. Like me. As I look across the field to our adjoined middle school I see little going on this week, though students were coming and going the first week of winter break. *beep* if I know how they decide what happens, with whom, and how. |
